(S3E16 Show Spoilers) Welcome to the Tombs appreciation post

Put some music on. Let's talk about how amazing this finale was.

I know it gets a lot of hate for being anticlimactic and a bad resolution to the Prison-Woodbury conflict, but god, this episode has so much rewatch value. In preparation for the S9 midseason premiere I've been rewatching the entire series, and there are so many great moments this episode.

  1. "Merle didn't do something like that his entire life." This calls back so well to what Carol told Merle in 3x15 - he told her she's a late bloomer, and she, probably not even knowing what was she telling him, told him "maybe you are too."
  2. Carl gunning the Woodbury kid down, then actually standing up to Rick - "if you'd have killed Andrew, mom would be alive. If you'd have killed the Governor, Merle would be alive." That's the first time Carl really entered the series as a player on his own, this is rebirth for him and it's absolutely stunning.
  3. The way the group, especially Hershel and Rick, welcome remaining Woodbury population to the prison. Rick is at the peak of his leadership to that point - he has a clear vision of what he wants to build.

However, the most devastatingly beautiful moment is where Rick looks up at the gangway, and Lori's not there. He's come to peace with what's happened, isn't guilty anymore. He's going to to do whatever it takes to raise Carl in this world, now that he's fought through hell and back to get him to safety.

This series has had such a big impact on me, and this is only season 3. I can't wait to see what I learn going on. Carol's huge next season :)
