Today, not one but two articles came out speculating about the ending of Better Call Saul through the discussion of Rhea Seehorn getting passed-by for an Emmy she rightfully deserves. I never assumed myself to be really opinionated on the topic of what happens on Better Call Saul but, in discussing this with a few people today I learned I indeed have a lot of opinions on the finale of the show, whenever it happens. So, as a HUGE fan of the show I figured I’d share my thoughts of what the finale will look like. I love Better Call Saul, I’m not attacking it in anyway. I know some r/ message boards can get testy when you discuss television shows and I’ve been called a troll on my old account when talking about a bunch of my favourite shows before. Suffice it to say, Better Call Saul and Fargo are the only two shows I love enough to purchase the new seasons as they debut.
How I see the finale playing out:
Saul/Gene/Jimmy is at his wits’ end, he’s at the end of his rope and filled with so much anxiety he can’t see a way out. As a last ditch attempt to find some closure, or try again he uses whatever backchannels he has left at his disposal to find Kim’s current address. He either gets on a bus or drives for two days straight to whatever state she resides in. It’s night as Jimmy approaches the property. Kim lives in a ritzy neighbourhood, her driveway is a hilly path. Her house is a beautiful modern one story house, there’s an Audi and a fully loaded BMW SUV in the driveway, her front porch is that type of granite that shines like black glass. Jimmy rings the doorbell, Kim answers. She has gracefully aged, she is fit and happy looking. Her hair has nicely aged to a glossy white that suits her well. She is wearing expensive clothing and carrying a glass of white wine. This house is where she lives with her husband who’s a successful business man, as well as her three teenage boys.
Kim is shocked to see Jimmy. She looks at his disheveled state with pity, they look at each other for 2 minutes. Communicated entirely non-verbally, on her face, you can tell she wishes to help Jimmy but, she remembers the pain and heartache caused by always being in his corner. She thinks of all she’s achieved without him holding her down. He’s silently begging for her help but, uneasily she slowly closes the door. Cut to black, producer’s names begin rolling, all the sounds of the night like the trees, the bugs, the passing cars are amplified as not a word is said, end finale.
Ending #2:
After Kim closes the door we hear her husband ask “Who was it?”
Kim stutters, “It was…” She chokes her emotions back and straightens out and stoically says “—just Slippin’ Jimmy.”
I like the idea of ending #2 because in the entire series she’s the one person who constantly tells Jimmy that he’s not Slippin’ Jimmy anymore. That he’s got worth and value and isn’t some two-bit con artist. And here, after a decade or more of solemn reflection on that time in her life she comes to see him as just Slippin’ Jimmy. The reasons I don’t like it and included it separately is because 1) Silence speaks volumes that talking can not, it’s wayyyy more powerful if a word is not spoken between them and 2) with the intimacy and familial trust required to build a strong marriage Kim’s husband would already know who Slippin’ Jimmy is and either punch him or call the State Police to let them know he’s in town.
Those are my thoughts, what are yours?
