Let's talk about one of (if not THE) most brutal stories ever told in the Walking Dead universe: "The Prison Arc". I'll keep this spoiler free, so don't worry if you haven't read the comics (even if you SHOULD. Immediately).

• Safety Behind Bars (Volume 3)
The Walking Dead comic series has been known, mostly, by how dark it is. And, as I've said before, this is probably the darkest storyline in the series. From beheading to suicide, to people just going insane, "Safety Behind Bars" is a perfect example of how broken these people are (and are going to be). It brings a gritty persperctive on what our character's new world could become (if there EVER is one).

• The Heart's Desire (Volume 4)
Similar to Volume 2, this is a more character driven chapter. And I think it succeds more at that than that volume, because of how "Safety Behind Bars" affected the characters. Even if it isn't very eventful, it is a very interesting volume, for sure.

• The Best Defense (Volume 5)
The introduction to the main conflict of this arc, and also the introduction to who I believe to be the filthiest, vilest, and most hateable character in The Walking Dead franchise. Quite a lot happens in this one. Once you reach Issue #27, this story makes some really bold choices, that I really appreciate. It is a very disturbing volume.

• This Sorrowful Life (Volume 6)
It's hard to find spark of hope in the middle of this sorrowful life. Things are bad. Death, suffering, and betrayal are holding it back from the group. But maybe all of this can get better, maybe they can get through all of this shit that is happening. This is a very, very solid volume. Great character work and overall story.

• The Calm Before (Volume 7)
Volume 7 is definitely the weakest out of these. Not bad, no. But it is very slow and uneventful. It lacks excitement, besides a couple of things that happen in the middle. The death of a certain character is also really disappointing. Just an ok volume.

• Made To Suffer (Volume 8)
Considered by many as the best, or at least a top 5, volume. The climactic end to the Prison saga, but a little too far from perfect in my opinion. I don't mind any of the issues in this as a whole, but there's obviously some pacing problems here. First of all, the TV episode "Too Far Gone" adapts basically five issues of this volume, and still manages to be better. Mostly because it's all really chaotic, tense, and very well paced. However, I'd say the last issue in this volume is on the same level as that - and maybe even better. This feels weirdly paced because of how the conflict starts, then stops, then starts again... and I really feel like the first main death of this volume (the one with the sword) is very poorly handled. Comparing it to its TV version, it's actually pretty bad. But yeah, even with all of that, this is one of the most action packed and memorable volumes. It's possibly the biggest game-changer in the series.

My overall rating is:
Safety Behind Bars - 9/10
The Heart's Desire - 7.5/10
The Best Defense - 8/10
This Sorrowful Life - 8/10
The Calm Before - 6.5/10
Made To Suffer - 8.5/10
If you read it until here, hope you're having a nice day! :)
