[NO SPOILERS] How did this show become so massively popular and mainstream being a fantasy show?

Does anyone have any insight on how a fantasy genre show with dragons, night walkers, stone men, swords, shields etc., became so mainstream and popular with people who I feel would’ve never been into such a show? I feel like an overwhelming amount of people I know who publicly laud GOT would’ve back in high school made fun of kids for watching a show like this...
