The entire army of the dead and all the white walkers were killed as soon as the NK died, which assumes he has utter control of white walkers like he does the army of the dead. So why didn't he just stay back holed up north of the wall, while he sent out his army/WW to kill everyone? I can only think of four threats of which can mostly be easily countered.
1) Dragons. The WW are very strong, as shown when one slapped Sam away. Meaning they can spam ice spears at the Dragons and create an even stronger army from their corpses.
2) Obsidian. Even before the NK revived all the dead soldiers, the army of the dead completely overwhelmed Winterfell, so it shouldn't be a major problem.
3) Wildfire. Imo this is how the army of the dead should have been dealt with for the most part in the original.
4) Assassins such as Arya. This can be countered by the very complex method of protecting yourself, perhaps with armour, bodyguards and hiding?
The NK was hyped up for years, and he was dealt with so cheaply, the characters greatest weapons were never fully utilised.
