[spoilers]. When did hbo re-edit the first episode? Just started a re-watch and noticed they cut the lamented near final scene of …

Drogo raping Daenerys. This was always a hot button issue but did they ever say they were cutting this? It doesn’t add much to the plot but it’s weird they decide to go back and edit things out a decade later. Especially when hbo regular puts out just as offensive or more offensive stuff all the time.

I'm a total newbie at this fandom, trying to know things more.

I started first with the telltale games, completed two seasons, started third today. Haven't watched the show. Got to know about literature content as well.

So my questions, I think TWD is a whole fandom universe which started with comics and stories and there are many people surviving in there, different people. Like many many different groups, and not focused on few people and a single group. When I played first two seasons of the game, I thought Clementine, Lee, Kenny, etc story revolves around these people, and whole fandom is their progress in survival. But when I learnt more about compendiums and other books, there were not anything particular about those characters which I mentioned. I thought everything starts as it was shown in game, and in comics it would be same. That at first there would be Lee and Clementine. But it wasn't like that. So now I think that there are many stories set in this TWD universe and game's episodes were made off of few particular stories out of many that exist. And then show would be like that too, just taking some parts and making up a show. Whereas the real story and characters are very different. That's what mostly happens to shows or movies based on novels or books, they are not the complete version but just few event here and there arranged in a movie. And same is with TWD game and show.

Tell me if I'm wrong with what I said, and I would love to get more precise knowledge. I'm trying to get to know more things and hopefully I'll get the Compendium Vol.1

[Spoilers] Game of Thrones is simply spectacular on 4k Blu-ray

I had The Long Night and The Bells from season 8 recorded on my DVR back from when these first aired back in 2019. I figured I would rewatch them at some point. Then when House of the Dragon was announced I decided to save the rewatch closer to when that was due to air.

Lo and behold the series premiere was announced for 21 August a short while back. But seeing as how I now had a 4k player I opted to buy season 8 on UHD disc instead. I am very glad I did, it is a top tier release with respect to audio and video.

The most impressive aspect from watching on 4k is seeing how much rich detail and texture is in the costumes. To date I have yet to see any movie in 4k which matches this. Cersei and Daenerys's outfits in particular look amazingly good in every scene but even regular soldiers like the Lannister army, Unsullied and Golden Company and background characters look very impressive in their armour and clothing. In addition to the costumes, being able to see the make-up and character facial expressions in this format is very impressive. This was a show with a loaded cast who knew how to convincingly depict emotion. Cersei's tears, Jon Snow's horror and Arya's shell-shocked panic all come through strongly as Drogon rips through Kings Landing.

In terms of presentation the HDR on 4k really makes the visuals look great and in particular very much helps with The Long Night which looked quite murky and dark in broadcast format. The audio is also excellent. Even in plain Dolby Digital and not Atmos the score and sound effects convincingly swirl around and put you right in the heart of the action.

I thought I would just watch Long Night and The Bells from the season but ended up watching the whole thing.

In any case I will be getting more seasons in UHD and am thinking of getting the complete set to do a rewatch of the entire series.

Do you have any creepy/eerie scenes or moments from the show?

I love those creepy little moments in the show when the action has toned down and it's just the post-apocalyptic world and the aftermath. What are some of yours?

One of my personal ones, it's actually from Fear The Walking Dead, epsiode 1, around the 39 minute mark, Madison sees a figure in the park, sort of standing/hobbling. Now this is all BEFORE the full-blown outbreak. It just sent a chill up my spine. Imagine seeing one of the earliest walkers and knowing how the world would turn out to be.

here's a link to the image: https://imgur.com/a/xZjwuGL

I'd love to know your eerie moments in the series.

How does the gang keep themselves so hygienic?

Been on a rewatch and been wondering, how does the gang keep themselves so hygienic? Like during the stint between the farm and the prison and the prison and Alexandria you'd have thought that someone would've died from like natural disease or just from being so dirty all the time, especially with a lack of food, clean water, and medicine. If I were there I'd have probably died early on from an allergic reaction. You think they stop somewhere to clean up every now and again? Probably why half the characters(Particularly the female characters) still look super clean lmao.

What do you guys think?

[SPOILERS] Just finished season 8 episode 3 here's what I think before I finish the season.

I liked the final battle at Winterfell. Not sure if this Sub absolutely hates season 8 and everything in it but I like the battle. It had more than a fair share of poor and braindead moments but I still really enjoyed it.

Episode 3, I loved the beginning of the battle it's honestly one of my favorite moments in the show. The hundred thousand dothraki riders with flaming swords running out to fight was badass, the uneasy feeling and sense of inevitable doom was nailed perfectly. I was in complete shock when Edd got gutted when he saved Sam, but I thought most of the fights scenes were handled well. When they set the trench on fire that's when shit was unbelievably dumb, not only do they stop using the catapults super early in but while the fire is going on the undead stand still. Yes, the undead don't move a fucking muscle, and not once did anyone do anything of use I mean they just fucking sat there and stared at them. They weren't moving at all there was no reason for them not to just unload arrows into this unmissable undead wall, I mean you would have killed hundreds by the time the fire was put out. Maybe I'm forgetting something but idk why they didn't do this.

And what made it worse is when they get to the wall and are climbing up the wall they just wait. They don't have spears to stab them or rocks or even tar to cover the walls or pour on them and light them on fire. I mean if you covered them in tar or something and lit them on fire you would have a giant mound of fire against your wall which would kill the undead on exposure. But instead they let them pile up then they start to attack. Maybe I'm looking at it in a stupid way or I just don't understand anything but I feel like they could have made so many different defences that would have worked better than what they had. I understand they were put on a time frame but I feel like they still could have done more.

Throughout the entire thing I absolutely loved it, I thought the fights were absolutely amazing seeing Arya just fuck them up with that dual spear was cool af. Watching Tormund Jorah and Greyworm just pile up body's was awesome. Maybe I'm completely wrong about the defense but that's the only part that really ruined the battle for me. Honestly my favorite part and one of the best parts in the entire show was when little Lyanna Mormont charged the Giant with her axe and got picked up, even when she was getting crushed and literally getting her chest caved in she pulled out a knife and killed the giant.

Now something I just couldn't stand was the crypts. Like holy fucking shit man that is the dumbest shit ever. Literally no one thought to put 5-10 guards down there? Not even because of the coffins but just in case some undead got in. But Instead they leave it undefended and that resulted in half the people in there being killed. If there were guards then I definitely missed them. Another issue I had was when Dany sweps in to save Jon when the Night king rose the undead. "oH Let Me JusT Sit HeRe wHilE HunDreDS oF UnDEad STaB aNd CuT My DRagOn" like that was honestly one of the most brain dead moments in the episode, you're literally on the ground and you let hundreds of undead get up and stab and skin your dragon as you keep it on the ground. She didn't try to fly away she fell off and then the dragon was able to fly away and shake them off. This ended up killed the main man Jorah Mormont.

Then we get to Theon and his Ironborn defense. To protect one of the most important people in all of Westoros you give his defense to Theon and like 13 Ironborn? They put in alot of work but like the Zombies are on top of them and they still use their Bows no swords or nothing. Theon clears them all out only to be surrounded by like 500 more and every white walker and then he just charges at the most powerful being in the castle. Like what the fuck, why would you charge him at all? Why would you literally run to into the center of the enemy's forces? As much as I loved Arya her killing the Night king felt lame, there was no big battle with him no clash of swords or near death moment's just a quick hand switch and stab to the stomach. She could have killed him but not like that.

They killed my favorite character Jorah so I'm absolutely devastated but he went out like a Boss. So did Beric I think he went out fucking awesome, saved Arya killed undead and bought them some time to get a gap in between them.

But overall as negative as this post seems and I know I mentioned it twice but I actually really loved the battle. It has it's fair share of braindead moments but it was probably one of the coolest battles in the entire show. They killed a lot of my favorites some went out badass some were shocking and some felt lame. But besides the defense and brain dead moments I did enjoy it and as crazy as this is to say if the books ever have a invasion I would want it to be similar to this in terms of army size and battles. I really liked it but it's so fucking rushed it's insane. I just know that the last episodes are gonna have to be really bad in order to fit anything involving a battle for the iron throne in.

[Spoilers] Just finished the series for first time and tbh I loved the whole show

Yes, the whole show was really great, it had amazing drama and amazing scenes. I got hooked to this show from S1 E2, from that scene where joffrey and sansa start walking then later a whole drama starts. Anyway even seasons 5-8 were actually pretty good, still better than other tv shows. I just don't get the hate for bad rushed writing and for not even being logical. Like sure it was rushed but I didn't feel it bad. I went with bad expectations for seasons 7-8 but I actually absolutely loved S7 while season 8 was ok, the ending wasn't as bad as people said. The thing I loved in the later seasons is that many characters get to meet each other, and that was pretty exciting. Anyway speaking of seasons 1-4, they split every characters and made them pair up with other characters (like jamie-brienne, arya-hound) and made the relationship between then which was also good. It felt like there was a lot of dialogue in 1-4 .

So my episode ranking is 4>3>1>6>7>2>5>8

Yeah I will probably be critized for this rankings but still I loved seasons 1-7 while 8 bit ok

Andy is such a phenomenal actor

Andrew Lincoln is amazing for 9 seasons straight, it's insane. He absolutely nails every evolution of Rick Grimes. Every clip I see of him on tiktok, all I see is someone who is so built for the apocalypse, obviously nothing like Andy in real life, which displays how amazing he is at bringing Rick to life whenever he wants. You'd think he'd get tired of the role, but I mean, he is always showing that deep emotion that must be so hard to constantly portray. Because I have just watched a clip of him seeing Morales again in Season 8, and the look of dawning comprehension and utter astonishment at seeing him after so long looks so real. In Season 1 you see the exact same level of pain as you can see in Season 9. Even when he wanted to leave the show, his final performance in Episode 5 is so good. Just for example his mannerisms while talking to Shane or Hershel, they fit each scene so well, just like his shock in the hospital in Season 1. As a Brit, I'm so proud that he went to Atlanta and dominated the show, bringing to life and forming one of the best fictional characters ever, and I'm super glad that the casting team under Darabont found him as the perfect Rick. I really hope we get to see a new version of Rick next year, while also getting Andy's best acting despite it being a few years since he dropped the role.

as the title says i just finished season 7. i heard that there was a huge drop off in quality after 6 but i still really enjoyed this season. of course there were parts i didn’t like but i’d still say it was very good imo. of course some things were weird to get used to (traveling the entire country in a single scene, although i didn’t really mind that because it helped tell the story better and quicker without dragging it out). but i was around when the internet lost their shit at season 8 and how utterly terrible it was. so i ask this is season 8 really THAT bad and should i reign in my expectations for a satisfying ending to the show? please don’t spoil anything about the plot just give your opinion on the ending

[No Spoilers] What If Rhaegar Never Passed Over Elia Martell?

Let me present to you a hypothetical "What If...?" scenario, plus a few additional details here and there, and a few questions and you tell me how you think things would play out.

The Setting: The Great Tourey at Harrenhal.

Brandon, Eddard, Lyanna, and Benjen Stark are introduced to Howland Reed, Lyanna is betrothed to Robert Baratheon, Jaime Lannister is made a member of the Kingsguard of Aerys II Targeryen, nicknamed The Mad King, Eddard Stark and Ashara Dayne seem to have a connection, Brandon Stark is betrothed to Catelyn Tully, and Rhaegar Targeryen, the Crown Prince, is cleaning up at the Tourney. However, instead of Lyanna Stark, What If...Rhaegar crowned Elia Martell, his wife and the mother of his children, his queen of love and beauty?

This would obviously mean no Robert's Rebellion and Rhaegar would still be devoted to Elia. Eddard and Ashara could likely fall in love and get married. Same with Robert and Lyanna. However, more than this, what does this mean for Rhaegar? Does he gather with his allies in secret to discuss deposing his clearly mad father? Which of the Great Houses would Rhaegar likely have at his back? Would he be able to get his mother, brother Viserys and unborn sister Daenerys on his side to keep them safe from Aerys? Who would be Rhaegar's Hand and Small Council? Feel free to add any other details that could be relevant to this scenario!

UPDATE: I might make more posts that follow along with this scenario.

[SPOILERS] Preface for first time watcher?

preface for first time watcher?

Ive seen the show multiple times through but im going to be showing my brother for the first time. Hes not familiar with the books. I usually give a short preface when showing someone new season 1 since theres a lot of world building, odd names and interconnected histories. Some find that sort of thing overwhelming and hard to get into.

Does anyone else have a run down, warm up or primer for introducing someone new to the immense world of the series?

I understand going in blind, i always give them that choice. I find that people enjoy it a lot more the first time around when they feel like they have a slight grasp on the prior war and a bit of the history - without spoilers ofcourse.

I would like to hear from people who have a similar approach to showing a first time watcher - what kind of main points, relevant histories or context do you think will help someone new get the most out of a first time watch of season 1-3?

The HOTD trailer got me stoked, so I reread Fire and Blood from "Heirs of the Dragon - A Question of Succession" through "Aftermath - The Hour of the Wolf." That covers all the "Dying of the Dragons" chapters. I wanted to get reacquainted with the story and characters.

I had forgotten how nuts it was. Even those that accept Daenerys cracking and burnIng Kings Landing as cannon and not bad writing (I think bad writing), she does hold a candle to these Targaryens. Everybody was truly bonkers until it ended. Even the non-Targaryens went crazy.

I'm looking forward to the show!

[Spoilers] rewatched entire series to see who is the most evil character

Rewatched the series to see who was the most evil character and there is zero doubt in my mind, Daenerys is the most evil. Did she do more good things than Cersei? 100%. Did she do much more evil than Cersei? Also 100%. The difference is we only saw the beginning of Daenerys being evil. In her adolescent stage of being evil, she decided to massacre a city even though she had the option of not committing a mini holocaust. After being taunted by the entire city and walked naked through the streets, who did Cersei kill? Not everyone who did her wrong, but everyone in the presence of her worst offenders. Daenerys put the advocate of the people (Varys) to death, she attempted to put all the people themselves to death, and she showed no remorse for any of it. To use the words of a Clegane, she’s a cunt.

All it took was that last episode for me and the whole thing clicked. It even made the last season worth it for the setup.

I won't spoil anything but if you're sleeping on this show I would suggest bringing yourself back online.

[spoilers] Do any of you watch an earlier random episode and get blown away again?

Specially when you had no plans of watching or starting a rewatch. And I’m mostly referring to earlier episodes so as not to start drama about the ending and the latter seasons. But sticking to strictly s 1-5, although I’d include S6 personally. It don’t matter, I’m simply talking about watching an earlier episode and being blown away. What goes through your mind. For example, today HBO was showing some later episodes of s3, I watched e8-9-10. After each ending, I got those same feelings as when I first watched those episodes. What a miracle of a TV show.

[Spoilers] Who are the most evil characters from Game of Thrones in your opinion?

So, for those of you who don`t know there is a trope created by TV Tropes called Complete Monsters (also known as Pure Evil). They are regarded as the very worst of the worst characters from a certain franchise. There are a lot of requirements for these trope but the main ones are the following:

  1. The character has ABSOLUTELY NO REDEEMING QUALITIES. Even if a character has some redeeming qualities at the start of the story he/she could still become a Complete Monster if he/she loses them. Even one single redeeming quality is enough to disqualify a character from this trope.
  2. The character in question commits horrible, atrocious crimes that are presented seriously within the story and their actions are worse than the actions of most other villains in the story. We also take into account their resources and their ability to cause harm to other people. This means that if a character has more resources (if for example he/she is a ruler that commands thousands of people), then he/she needs to comit bigger atrocities in order to stand out. If a character has less resources to harm people (for example, if he/she is a lone serial killer), then he/she qualifies if their crimes are heinous enough considering their resources. If a character`s actions are not heinous enough by the standards of the story then he/she can`t be a Complete Monster. The character`s crimes must pass several different heinous standards in order for the character to count as a Complete Monster:

- The baseline standard - This is a common standard that all villains need to pass, no matter the work they come from. This means that the villain needs to commit crimes that are worse than animal cruelty, theft, abuse (unless the abuse is REALLY extreme but that rarely happens) and trying to kill the main characters (because this is something most villains try to do).

- The standards of the work - This means that the villain should be compared to other villains from the same work (or franchise) to see if his/her actions are bad enough to make him/her stand out. This means that a villain who comes from a lighthearted series like My Little Pony needs to be compared to other villains from My Little Pony and not to villains from grimdark franchises such as Warhammer 40000, A Song of Ice and Fire and Berserk. Similarly, a villain who comes from a work with high heinous standard should  be compared to other villains from the same franchise and not to villains that come from My Little Pony.

- The resource standard - This means that we should also take into consideration the villain`s resources and their ability to hurt other people as I already mentioned.

- The system standard - This means that if a villain is part of an organization or a group, then the villain needs to be the worst member or one of the worst (if the organisation is big like the Galactic Empire for example)

3) The character`s motivation for commiting those crimes or the character him/herself are never portrayed sympathetically and he/she has either no excuse for his/her actions or their excuse is not portrayed sympathetically. Even if the character in question has some traumatic moment that has shaped his/her personality, it doesn`t excuse their actions and the narrative doesn`t try to make you feel sorry for them.

4) The character has enough understanding of human morality to tell right from wrong and make decisions. This means that characters who are severely mentally ill, possessed or brainwashed or from a race or culture that can`t comprehend morality or has an entirely different morality can`t qualify. However, characters who are mentally ill can still qualify if they can tell right from wrong despite their mental illness (for example, the Joker).

5) The character is portrayed seriously and is not a Comic Relief (a character you are supposed to laugh at and not take very seriously). Even if the character is funny he/she can still be a Complete Monster if they are portrayed seriously despite their sense of humor. If the character is treated as a joke by the narrative itself (which often happens in kid`s shows), then he/she can`t be a Complete Monster.

6) The character must make AT LEAST ONE APPEARANCE in the story itself. Characters that are just mentioned by other characters and make no appearance can`t qualify. Aside from that, if all the crimes commited by the character happen off-screen/off-page and are only vaguely described, then he/she can`t be a Complete Monster. That being said, flashback characters can qualify under certain circumstances if they have enough personality.

7) The audience is not supposed to feel bad for a Complete Monsterr when something bad happens to him/her because their comeuppance is completely deserved and the narrative doesn`t try to make the audience feel sympathy for the Complete Monster.

8) The character must come from a work which has at least some semblence of plot and is not pure exploitation and is more complex than "bad guy does evil things for no apparent reason" type of plot. A horror film or book can still contain a Complete Monster but it needs to have some plot. For this reasons films like Human Centipede and Serbian Film don`t contain Complete Monsters because they are viewed by TvTropes as plotless exploitation even though the villains are extremely repulsive.

9) A character must meet ALL of the above mentioned criteria in order to be a Complete Monster.

Below, I will copy and paste the entries of all 9 characters from the series that are listed as Complete Monsters on TV Tropes and are considered to be the worst of the worst:

  • King Joffrey I Baratheon graduates from a spoiled prince to a "vicious idiot" of a ruler following the death of his supposed father Robert. Having once tried to kill his fiancée Sansa Stark's younger sister and lowborn friend for standing up to him, Joffrey swiftly orders the execution of Eddard Stark, Lord of the North and father to Sansa, even knowing it will mean war. Throwing aside all pretense of charm, Joffrey also begins regularly tormenting his captive bride-to-be, forcing Sansa to gaze at the severed head of her father while having his Kingsguard beat her at his leisure. A whimsical sadist, Joffrey responds to a bard's taunting song by ordering him mutilated and when his rule drives starving peasants into accosting him, orders them all be put to death in a bloody riot. Lusting at the mere thought of violence, Joffrey forces one prostitute bought for him to beat another, later restraining and shooting the survivor to death for his own amusement. Not even family is safe from his insanity, with Joffrey threatening to kill his mother, ordering his uncle assassinated, and having all of Robert's bastard children—including babies—murdered to secure his false claim to the throne. A blossoming teenage psychopath even without the years of most of Westeros's worst behind him, Joffrey's short rule is marked by such cruelty he is said to have possibly grown to surpass the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen for sheer depravity.
  • Petyr Baelish, aka "Littlefinger", is a manipulative, self-serving man who believes that "chaos is a ladder", and orchestrates a variety of Westeros's misfortunes to climb to the top. Owning and operating a brothel whose workers he abuses, mistreats, and even mutilates to suit his clients' desires, Baelish callously has any who cross him sent off to be butchered, notably handing off Ros to be tortured to death by Joffrey Baratheon. Out of both ambition and a petty desire to possess the hand of Catelyn Stark, Baelish kick-starts the War of the Five Kings by seducing Lysa Arryn into murdering her husband while Baelish stages an assassination attempt on Catelyn's crippled son, turns kingdoms against one another, and personally arranges the death of Catelyn's current husband Eddard "Ned" Stark and many of his men. Profiting off the massive, bloody war that costs thousands of lives across Westeros, Baelish murders Lysa and shifts his lustful attentions from Catelyn to her young daughter Sansa, psychologically abusing the girl before sending her off to be raped and tortured so as to later "save" her from her fate and convince her to team with him in wiping out her own family. His scheming leading to unfathomable death and devastation through the kingdoms and empowering monsters like Joffrey and Ramsay Bolton/Snow, Baelish is willing to doom countless lives—even those of his apparent loved ones—so long as it brought himself good fortune, proudly boastful that the climb to power for power's sake is the only thing that truly matters to him.
  • Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain, is the most feared knight in Westeros and works for Tywin Lannister and his family. A violent sadist who had once burned his brother Sandor's face for playing with one of his toys, Gregor is introduced in the Hand's tournament where he murders another contender via splintered lance; when Loras Tyrell manages to unhorse him, Gregor slaughters his own horse for failing him and attempts to murder Loras. When Gregor's own brother interferes, Gregor tries to kill him as well. When next seen, Gregor is head of the occupying Lannister forces at Harrenhal where he selects prisoners to be tortured to death by one of his men known as the Tickler. When Harrenhal is lost, Gregor has every prisoner put to the sword, leaving hundreds of corpses for the next arrivals to find. In season 4, Gregor is seen practicing his sword skills by butchering prisoners in wholly one-sided duels before he enters into a Trial by Combat representing the Crown against Prince Oberyn Martell who wishes to force Gregor to confess to the murder of Oberyn's sister Elia and her children. When Gregor gets his hands on Oberyn, he shoves his thumbs through the prince's eyes before squeezing his head until it explodes, wanting to hurt the man as much as possible while he roars out his guilt in killing the children before he raped and murdered Elia.
  • Lord Walder Frey, head of House Frey, after a few episodes of pretension as nothing but a doddering old pervert, proves his true evil when he conceives of the Red Wedding. For the sake of getting back at Lord Robb Stark for not honoring his wedding vow, Frey has Robb, his pregnant wife, his mother, hundreds of his bannermen, and even Robb's direwolf Grey Wind massacred in one of the most devastating acts of treachery Westeros ever sees. When his wife is taken hostage, Walder throws her away and remarks "I'll find another." Spending the rest of his life rubbing his hands over the power he backstabbed his way into, Lord Walder violates every single value even the cutthroat world of Westeros upholds.
  • Craster is a particularly nasty Wildling who resides beyond the Wall, making his living as an ally to the Night's Watch by providing them with supplies, shelter and info. Craster delights in antagonizing them, however, hiding behind the fact he's necessary to them to avoid reprisal. What makes Craster sickening is how he rules his self-given kingdom: Craster routinely marries any daughters he has when they come of age, beating and raping his many wives and daughter-wives. If they bear him sons, Craster sacrifices them by leaving them out for the White Walkers.
  • Ramsay Bolton/Snow, the bastard son of Lord Roose Bolton and the most vicious member of House Bolton, is a sadist with a knack for torture and flaying others alive. After capturing Winterfell, Ramsay proceeded to play twisted games with the captive Theon Greyjoy, pretending to be an Ironborn agent who comes to save Theon—killing his own men to keep up the ruse—and culminating in Ramsay bringing Theon to the Dreadfort and subjecting him to prolonged, hideous torture, including flaying bits of him and castrating him. All that remains of Theon afterwards is a broken, obedient shell whom Ramsay dubs "Reek." In his spare time, Ramsay and his equally psychotic lover Myranda release girls into the woods to hunt them for sport, also using the girls to feed Ramsay's savage hounds. When Ramsay makes Theon negotiate a surrender with other Ironborn, Ramsay guarantees their safety, only to have them flayed alive and displayed as gruesome trophies. After marrying Sansa Stark, Ramsay rapes her on the wedding night and continues to sexually and physically abuse her throughout the rest of the marriage. Ramsay cements his rule over his hold by murdering Roose and having his hounds eat his infant brother and stepmother. When he finally engages the Northern armies, Ramsay is apathetic to the death of his own men and shoots the preteen Rickon Stark dead—moments before he reaches Jon Snow. With few matching his pointless savagery, Ramsay Snow exemplified every negative stereotype about bastards in Westeros.
  • Karl Tanner is a former assassin and sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Taking over Craster's Keep in a mutiny, Karl has his Lord Commander Jeor Mormont killed to drink wine from his skull while allowing his men to rape and abuse Craster's daughter-wives as they see fit. Having the only male child left to the cold, when Bran Stark and his group arrive Karl plans to torment and kill them all, even trying to force himself on the teenage Meera while forcing her brother to watch.
  • King Aerys II Targaryen, aka the Mad King, grew into a paranoid pyromaniac and one of the worst of his family's dynasty. Terrified of any threats to his power, Aerys begins murdering or torturing those who incense him, having one man's tongue torn out for making a joke. Becoming obsessed with the destructive wildfire, Aerys uses it to burn entire cities when he deems them to house traitors, even inviting a Northern lord to the capital before burning him alive when Aerys's son is accused of kidnapping the lord's daughter. His tyranny causing a massive rebellion, Aerys goes to war hoping to exterminate all Houses who oppose him, and eventually plans to burn all of King's Landing and his own half-a-million citizens within to kill his attacking enemies.
  • Euron Greyjoy once oversaw the burning of the Lannisport fleet. Banished from the Iron Islands by his brother King Balon after the Greyjoy Rebellion, Euron takes to the seas to follow the "Old Way", torturing and robbing crews, taking slaves, and raping women by the thousands. Returning to the Iron Islands to murder Balon and claim the Salt Throne, Euron joins Cersei Lannister in a war to conquer Westeros, intent on spreading his vile pillaging across the whole world.

According to these criteria, the most evil characters from the series are Joffrey, Littlefinger, Gregor Clegane, Walder Frey, Craster, Ramsay Snow, Karl Tanner, Aerys Targaryen and Euron Greyjoy.

Do you agree or disagree with this listing?

[SPOILERS] To be fair against the Casterly Rock of the show.

I wrote spoilers just in case people haven't caught up, even though they really ought to by now.I did not much care for the look of Casterly Rock as opposed to its description in lore when I first saw it. Misgivings I believe we all shared who are into the asoiaf histories. But I was thinking on the fact that across the board George Martin does "turn everything up to 11 in fantasy" as he stated in an interview including the scale of castles. Casterly Rock is not just massive, it is titanic, gargantuan. Thrice the height of the Wall and Hightower I mean can you imagine? Two leages in width and riddled with dwellings inside. I have sometimes questioned whether such a place would be practical or a feasible estate at all due to its sheer immensity. Getting from A to B by book standards would be an excersion in your own home and honestly I can't fathom how Tyrion survived, given that he did ache in his legs from the stairs of the Rock as we read. Maybe the Rock does have some kind of elevator system but this hasn't been confirmed as far as I know.

With this said, the show castle was not what was expected, but in its own right it must be said it's quite a beautifully designed concentric castle with a good location. A bit sterile and stern in vibe maybe, could've used more gardens and greenery (Tywin's stylistic choice maybe) but its position on the rocky promontory ensures that no attack can possibly ensue from the sea, allowing the Lannisters to predict the direction of sieges. It has a very good division between sections of walls and even if it isn't an actual mountain fortress it is still by realistic standards a massive stronghold which can indeed be argued to be nigh impregnable with some additons, such as what the youtuber Shadversity noted in his review where the front walls are perfectly in place for a moat. What's more is that you can very much realistically see people reside there. It's a beast of a castle in real terms, but not so over the top like Harrenhal that it's just nonsensical. I will say though that they could've at the very least have cgi'ed the rocky hill itself to be far taller to create a semblence to book descriptions.

Do I still prefer the book version? I suppose so, but I just thought we could look at it seperately for a minute and appreciate that whomever designed the castle exterior for the most part actually did a good job. As a side note: The castle always reminded me of the old royal palace of my country, Three Crowns Castle before it burnt down in 1697 and was replaced with the now standing Stockholm palace.

[SPOILERS] The politics underpinning the Bells

I wanted to build off a similar post and elaborate on Dany's motivations for what she does in S8E5.

The prologue at Dragonstone is essential for setting the scene for the battle to come. After executing Varys, Daenerys tells Jon "this is victory for her, now she(Sansa) knows what happens when people find out the truth about you" so from this we understand that Sansa wanted and suspected that Varys/Tyrion would support Jon. We also learn that Daenerys thinks others (High lords) would rally around him given the chance, which will almost certainly be presented to them thanks to the ravens Varys sent.

We've established that Daenerys is afraid of Jon usurping her. In a previous episode she tells him that "it will take on a life of its own and you won't be able to control what it does to people no matter what you swear" which is clearly foreshadowing the actions of Varys and is consistent with the sentiment said later that "she'll lose the North. And the Vale, Sansa will see to that". So we can gather that Dany's paranoia is not completely unfounded.

So how does this all translate in to burning alive thousands of people?

Well the last line Daenerys says in the episode is "let it be fear", she says this after Jon refuses to embrace her, a scene which further fuels her paranoia that Jon will betray her twice over. The concept of inspiring fear to subjugate the masses can be found all over real and fake ASOIAF history. One example that comes to mind is Aegon and Visenya burning Dorne in the hopes of inspiring enough fear in the Dornish people to overcome their loyalty to princess Meria. Of course there are differences but it's a good example none the less.

In the Bells, Daenerys must make an example of Kingslanding to dissuade the country from rallying around Jon Snow or offering any such resistance to her rule. When news of what happens spreads, high lords will see very clearly what can happen to their own cities and holdfasts if they dissent in any way.

Now the most common rebuttal is "Daenerys has always cared about the innocents" and I'll admit she has a proclivity towards them with many examples to choose from. However what I'd like you to consider is the exchange between Dany and Tyrion, "mercy is our strength, our mercy towards future generations who will never be held hostage by a tyrant". Here Daenerys believes the people that die tomorrow are necessary sacrifices because of the supposed "paradise" that her future subjects will live in. So in a warped sense, yes she does still care about the innocents but just not those that "live in their old world" but "live in her new one".

Another interesting point I'd like to raise is whether Daenerys considers the citizenry of KL accountable. Now there is a line where she says "now they are being held hostage by a Tyrant, whose fault is that. Mine?" which implies she does have some Viserys-like expectation (perhaps brought on by a grief stricken mental state) that the people would cast Cersei aside. Greyworm - acting under the Queens orders - executes Lannister prisoners because they're free men who chose to follow her. So these two scenes make me think that on some level Daenerys wants to make an example of KL to not only send a message to high lords but also to the people who follow them.

I'd like to end by touching on what Tyrion tells Jon in the series finale. He says "everywhere she goes evil men die and we cheer her for it" along with "she believes her destiny is to create a better world for everyone". Here it seems that Daenerys has conflated the devotion of her followers with some divine providence. The same "destiny" that made Stannis kill his daughter made Daenerys believe the world should bend to her version of paradise. And "what happens to things that don't bend?"

I just finished watching the first season and I thought every episode leading up to the finale was great. But holy shit the finale was mind-blowing and exciting starting with the Water tank scene I can’t wait to start season 2

I recommend you start the show if you haven’t.

[SPOILERS] (maybe?) Fire and Blood

I'm 107 pages in and I'm loving the book so far. It's not what I was expecting and I am absolutely okay with that.

Have any of you read it? What are your thoughts? If you aren't planning to, why not?

[SPOILERS] Why is everyone mad about Dany‘s character development in season 8?

I know, most of the people here would have loved to see Dany on the Iron Throne. While I‘m also not a big fan of season 8 either - the Dany Arc seems legit to me.

Regarding to the seasons before, she always was a power-thirsty ruler you couldn‘t really negotiate with.

  • Selling your own body to convince Khal Drago to take „back“ the Iron Throne.
  • Expects everyone to help her for free because she is the „rightful“ Queen.
  • Pretends to make deals (e.g. Astapor), to kill the people. Not really trustworthy. I mean slavery was their way of life. It‘s like you would have killed every man of the Confederate States of America in the past.
  • Burns people alive who won‘t follow her (poor Tarlys).
  • Crucifys a bunch of masters in Meeren, half of them innocent.
  • a lot of self-esteem.
  • destroying the economic backbone of a whole region.
  • threaten people to kill them or burn their cities, if they don‘t help her (e.g. Quarth or during the siege of Meeren)
  • unthankful regarding to her behaviour to Varys who saved her life and who secured Dorne and The Reach for her
  • and so on …

I mean she‘s pretty but that’s it. She was always a crazy little girl. Lack of strategic mind, no real idea of ruling (which was ok, when she was still listing to her advisors), underestimates her opponents.

In the medieval age it was common that if a dynasty was deposed, the descendants of that dynasty had no right to the throne.

So she isn‘t a real Queen by right as well. Even if - who of the small folk wants somebody on the throne, who’s father was a crazy and evil person?

Even Edmund Tully would have been a better king.

[Spoilers] Literally just finished watching the show for the first time.

I can’t help but feel left underwhelmed by the ending like for example bran becoming king? He’s boring and it felt like his story was never meant to lead there and he’s really punchable and i just want to punch him tbh cripple or not. Almost the entire last season just leaves me with an empty feeling while before i was absolutely loving this show. Now i just feel like it was wasted potential to end the show in a more epic way. Did you guys feel the ending gave you any actual real closure to the story?

[Spoilers] What is the point of this scene in Hardhome?

In Season 5 Episode 5, when Jon kills a walker with Valyrian steel, the Night King seems at least intrigued by it. At least in my case, I considered that as an indication of a possible rivalry, which had caught his attention and would give him special treatment for being a threat.

Too bad it all came to nothing, I think they didn't even have a real confrontation and Arya (Yes, Arya) was the one who defeated him.

I really don't see the reason for this scene if not even a confrontation scene between these two gave us.

(I apologize if there are some mistakes, English is not my language)
