How would Shane have dealt with Negan?

Well… personally, I don’t think Shane ever would have made it that far. We have to look past a lot history, (and I mean a LOT of history), and play a lot of the “What If?!” game to even put Shane and Negan in the same space.

I mean, to have Shane confront Negan would mean somehow surviving Rick, endearing himself to the group enough so that they didn’t shoot him, and then surviving the Governor, Terminus, and every other crisis while also being accepted by Alexandria. If he made it through all that, it wouldn’t be ‘Shane’ anymore, but a very different version of Shane.

Ok, so let’s assume for a moment that we could take Shane, (pre-death) and somehow time skip him to just before we meet the saviors. How would that Shane dealt with the issue?

So let’s talk about the two different Shane’s. Shane 1 is Original Shane (Pre-Death), Shane 2 is the Shane who didn’t get killed by Rick and somehow makes it all the way to see Negan.

Shane 1: Original Shane was cracking just before he died. Mentally, he was losing his grasp on reality and coming a threat not just to Rick, but to the entire group. He had already proven he was willing to kill just to further his own agenda, and his desire for Lori and Carl overrode his good sense.

Original Shane, if facing Negan in that pre-death state, would likely have lost his temper and attacked Negan. Shane could keep a measure of control when things were going his way, but the more they don’t, the worse he becomes beast-like and ruled by emotion.

Negan would likely let him live in the short term, (Negan was obsessed with Rick as the leader, and has shown time and again he really feels leaders are the biggest threat). Negan has a keen sense as a survivor for who could be rebellious now but potentially bend towards him later, and who is going to need to be browbeaten indefinitely. Shane would come across as the crazy type: the type of person who doesn’t like to bend to anybody AND doesn’t respond well to being browbeaten.

The end result? Original Shane would survive the first encounter with Negan, but likely die either from a 2nd encounter where he loses his temper. Shane has enough sense to know that a group is a key to surviving, he wouldn’t completely cut and run, but he certainly would be keen on replacing Rick as leader, (leading to his death by Negan or Rick), or to facing Negan too soon, (another scenario with him dying.)

I don’t see a way for Original Shane to survive long once the group met Negan.

Shane 2: Alternate Universe Shane. This Shane sucked it up, and instead of trying to kill Rick, laid his heart bare and asked forgiveness from his best friend. To prove his intentions, he fought like hell to get Rick and Carl through the walkers as the farm was invaded. Over time, this version of Shane has to develop different insights as Lori dies, the group encounters the Governor, Gavin, and eventually, Negan. To stay with the group, he falls in line with Rick’s leadership, and because he’s a terrific teacher, a hardened survivor, and (now) has the mental flexibility to see how Rick needs to be the leader, he becomes a bit of a secondary Darryl.

By the time we see the Saviors, there’s been a lot of water under the bridge between Rick, the group, and Alternate Universe Shane, who has shown on multiple occasions how much he has truly changed. When they meet Negan, Glen is still picked to die.

Broken up by the event and hurt to see Rick so emotionally beaten by Negan, Shane works hard to bring the survivor out of Rick again to attack Negan. The collision between the two groups happens faster this time as Rick has someone else to lean on in the group.

However, after Negan is defeated, Shane shoots Negan in his cell. Rationalizing that even if Rick doesn’t want to dirty his hands with this one particular life, Alternate Universe Shane has no compulsions against it and can live with it.
