I have been watching the show from the very beginning, and I know that some people might just watch this show for the zombies or the action. But, the biggest reason I watch this show is for the characters, their back stories, their relationships, the issues of humanity that come up in a world collapsing. When that is mixed in well and evenly with the dire predicaments of their situation, then that is when it really comes to life. Other people might feel differently but this is all just my opinion and I would love to hear about yours.
So, first off, I know that it just a TV show and not meant to be about the "Real world". But I like to imagine it in the context of, what if this happened to me, what if it happened in my own world. Would this actually happen. Do I believe that this is the way things would unfold.
I feel the character that I have connected with the most is Dwight, as strange as this might sound... considering some people really hate Dwight and the he has lately gotten barely any screen time. And we have definitely seen some profound and amazing characters. But with Dwight, I just personally connected with his story and related to the most because I felt that I could actually be him if the end of the world as i knew it happened, or I could be Sherry, or just somehow, in their world that created them and their relationship.
When he first came into the show I just felt it like I hadn't with any other character. I empathized with him, I understood him, I felt like his background story was believable and real and the most heart wrenching because of that stark realness. Him and Sherry- I felt like if I were in this scenario, I could be them, or they could be other people I know in my life, other couples I know, just trying to survive, losing each other in the process, losing that old love they had before things got really bad. When I first saw them running away from Negan before Dwight got burned, I was like, yeah, I would run like hell with my SO. And I would do whatever it takes to survive and to help him survive. And when you see what happened to them after they ran and decided to come back... It's like, holy shit.
The letter Sherry wrote was so real and genuine and I thought, yes that is probably exactly what I would write in this situation. The beer and pretzels part and the description of their imperfect relationship and Dwight's quirks and Sherry's mistakes just made me feel like I could relate even more. I felt her character and his so much because I feel they weren't given that fog that is placed over other characters on the show that make me say, yes this is great character development and very dramatic, but I would never believe this could really happen and I am not personally connecting with any of this.
Michonne for example, amazing character and so dramatic, but they introduced her as if she was some Supernatural force from the shadows. I see Michonne as unbreakable at this point and for that reason I never related to her or felt like I could envision this happening in the real world or to someone I know. I never worry about Michonne even in the worst predicaments. Of course in the comics it is a bit different after (spoiler).... after we see her brutal and long rape and torture by the governor.
But other characters I do worry about because of their realness and genuine, believable character development that makes me feel like they could be people I know in real life or me. If that makes sense... which it probably does not haha.
I also feel like the characters from the beginning of the show felt like real people, were more believable. Now in the show, some characters I look at and can't help but think, wow you are ridiculous and not believable at all.... and please tell me where you got that tiger from because I do not know one single person that would not shit their pants at the sight of a tiger. Or why do you live in a garbage dump and talk like this. It has not even been a decade since the walkers took over, so there is no reason why your language should be different from everyone else's. Or at least, explain why so the viewers understand.
Another thing that makes me super uncomfortable is all the points in the show when the characters are smiling at inappropriate moments and it seems like the producers are trying to make it a profound, meaningful moment when in reality, there is no time to randomly be stating these profound things about each other and be awkwardly smiling and making dramatic statements that make me cringe... It is time to face the real threats at hand. Not every moment has to be a statement about the dynamic of the group or where we are headed in the future. Like when Rick says to Maggie, I'll be following you after this... Cringey and it is not yet the time.... If you read the comics you know what happens with her, and so it felt too soon to introduce Maggy's story arc of when she turns into a leader like Rick-we have barely seen her as a leader so far and we need more time to watch it unfold before you spring stuff like that on us. I need to see her deal with Glenn's death more, with her pregnancy, and then grow from that before I would believe that she would be as big of a leader as Rick.
