Negan's walker-blood coated weapons

I feel like there has to be a time in previous seasons where walker blood on a weapon doesn't affect the person when they are injured by it. For example when Rick chops off Hershel's leg, wasn't Rick using that same ax to kill walkers? And Hershel didn't end up sick. What'd you guys think?
