In the books Stannis is made out to be this amazing military leader, he devised a brilliant strategy to destroy the Iron fleet, won the siege of Dragonstone, held Stormsend throughout Roberts rebellion. Yet when he faces the Boltons(in the TV show) he doesn't seek any allies with the Glovers, Umbers, Karstarks or Manderlys. In the book he utilises the Northern houses since its the middle of winter. His campaign was doomed to fail in the TV Show as he is marching with a mercenary army who are not used to the cold northern winters. None of his strategic genius is shown in the show making his story line extremely boring compared to his role in the books.
