I have always thought GoT is a great series and praised it for breaking with Hollywood traditions of plot armour, happy endings and other cliches. But then I remembered that Jon Snow got rescued twice by foreign armies chavalry charging in to save his life during battles he was going to lose or where he wasn't likely to win.
First Stannis appears during a negotiation where Jon was suicide attacking Mance and then when he was on the brink of defeat against Ramsay.
I still love this series and it broke with a lot of Hollywood traditions, but I guess you can't have a good story without some cliches.
