[TV] How the Funko Pop! figures changed my life

This is the story of how the Funko Pop! figures for Game of Thrones changed my life. I assure you, it is entirely unrelated to the fact we’ve just sold out to them. This is heartfelt.

Like so many of you, I fell in love with this story for the political plotting and posturing of characters like Cersei and Tyrion. The complex interplay between factions within factions, which so often ended in wounds. Physical, or mental, they ended in wounds.

In season 4, we saw our beloved Oberyn brutally crushed, and from then on, it just started to get too much for me. The world just felt so dark, and his half-a-face stuck in my mind, a cruel reminder of how brutal this world was. The violence was all I could see.

But then something changed. By the start of season five, friends and family knew I was a Game of Thrones fan. Birthdays and Christmases… you know the deal. A year later and I was inundated with Funko Pop! figures.

It was the best thing that could have happened to me.

When I saw the Oberyn figure, something clicked. The fun, comedic, happy style of the figure was such a juxtaposition to the horrible final image of him that lingered in my head, it was cleansing. It was like an opening of the soul.

Game of Thrones isn’t about the plotting or about the violence. It’s about the friendliness of the characters (like Jorah Mormont or Jon Snow). It’s about the alliances made, the companions found, the toasts in honour of a brother or sister-in-arms. That’s the essence of Game of Thrones, and that’s what the Funko Pop! figures capture like nobody else can.

Funko captures the heart of Game of Thrones, and realising that made me appreciate the show so much more.

Tl;dr: You can buy the Oberyn Martell Funko Pop! figure at this url.
