...exactly how does that happen?
I think the theory that Jimmy somehow ends up in prison is very likely, even though I'd rather some other kind of ending. It's thematically consistent, consistent with VG's personality and comments, the writers like Jimmy too much to kill him off like WW, etc.
But, what's left out in these "Jimmy goes to jail" theories are some pretty important plot points.
For example:
-Does Jimmy get found out somehow (as in his Cinnabon stress attack), or does he turn himself in?
-Does Kim have something to do with him turning himself in and/or getting caught? Also, if she is still interacting with him in the Saul period, was she involved in any of his criminal behavior, and if so was that traceable back to her? Plenty of branching off on this is possible.
-Most critically (for him, anyway), what sentence does he get (if any), with or without parole, in what kind of prison? And, if he is able to leave prison after having served time and/or wiggle out of a sentence, what will he do with his life afterward?
We have to think about the crimes he could be convicted of, what he actually did, and what chicanery could be used by him or his defense to lessen a sentence, etc. Remember, unlike Walter, Gus, Mike, or even Jesse, Jimmy's crimes as Saul were murkier and far more "hands off", making them harder to prosecute and easier to wiggle out of.
Of course, one theory asserts Jimmy could just admit to anything and everything and fall on his sword, but that is far too sappy for writers of this caliber considering that it wouldn't help anyone who was wronged (Jimmy's soft spot) and would essentially be suicide by self-pity.
I want to hear your thoughts on the details of such a hypothetical ending to the series. Maybe Jimmy does pull the melodrama and goes to prison for life, maybe he gets popped and comes out scot free. Maybe Kim was running ISZ Associates with Jimmy all along, maybe she left him years ago and turns him in in disgust when he contacts her after BrBa. And so on.
My thoughts? If Jimmy goes to jail in the end, it'll work like this:
Jimmy has some suspicion cast on him and he feels the walls closing in. After trying to reconnect with Kim, he understands he's in a virtual prison anyway, and turns himself in. He manages to pull out a trump card in some way (through good defense, lack of evidence, witness bargaining, or other chicanery) and serves time, but not nearly as much as he could have, in a place better than he could've been in.
