The Star Trek: Discovery premiere felt like a season finale.

Imagine the 2 episodes at the end of the season after getting to know the character for a whole season. They go around the galaxy, exploring new worlds, having fun being scientists. Then shit gets real and they encounter the Klingons. They get involved in a situation they have no business in: war. Plot-wise, it works. Almost nothing needs to be changed.

The emotional scenes had no weight to them. The scene in the brig, while well written, was ultimately pointless because we don't know who that guy is. Saru's backstory came across as ridiculous to me, (seriously, wtf does "We were biologically determined to sense the coming of death" mean?) but if we had a whole season of him acting the way he did in the beginning of the episode, his backstory would've had such emotional payoff to the point the ridiculousness of it could be overlooked. The conflict between Philippa and Michael, needless to say, would also be a lot more meaningful if there was an entire season before this episode. Michael's speech at the end was meaningless. "My dream is over...," no it isn't. It's the second episode. You're going to be on a new ship in the next one.

The promo for this season really comes across as one for a new season, where "everything changes." The main character is in jail, gets assigned to a new ship, is very dangerous, etc.
