They’ve been building up the Saviors since season 6.5, portraying them as ruthless and highly organized. What I love most is that every time Rick and the group try to get a step ahead, they almost always end up two steps behind.
Some examples of this are:
- The pre-emptive strike on the Saviors wasn’t the real stronghold, and only a small number of Saviors were killed.
- Carrying Maggie on-foot and ditching the RV does no good, as the Saviors were anticipating the groups arrival in the forest.
- Teaming up with the Scavengers backfires, as they end up taking Negan’s deal over Rick’s.
With 1.5 seasons of build-up, wasn’t S8E1 slightly out of place? I get that having Dwight as an informant has it’s perks, but Rick and the group successfully took out the Saviors patrol posts, pulled up to their compound, and successfully attacked without a single backstep or fatality.
Negan bringing out Gregory was hardly a twist, as the audience has known no one would follow him for some time now.
Am I being too impatient? Are Rick’s misfortunes about to occur in episode 2? Or are the Saviors not as tough of a foe as we once thought?
