Thank you Netflix for Godless

I want to preface this by saying that generally speaking I'm not a huge fan of the western genre. I've had some films I like but in general, I wouldn't call it one of my favorite genres out there.

After seeing the trailer for Godless pop up on my Netflix feed I decided to give it a shot. I have to say that I'm so glad I did. First off, thank you Netflix for taking a chance with a limited release show. I, like many other content consumers out there, have far too many shows to watch and adding another lengthy show to my watch list usually means something else gets taken off. With a limited release schedule I knew going in that this was going to be over in seven episodes and I wouldn't be forced to make the tough call as to which shows I'd have to stop watching to make room for this one.

The characters in this show are quite honestly some of the most complex I've seen in a long time. I had my doubts that Jeff Daniels could pull off a truly villainous role but as the show progressed I realized just how complicated and interesting a character he created. Frank Griffin isn't your typical shoot 'em up bad guy from other westerns, this guy has real depth and it makes his motives all that much more interesting.

The character of Roy Goode was also very interesting and despite never having seen that actor before, I think he did a phenomenal job in bringing him to life.

When the last episode finished I felt that the story was complete, I was glad to have watched it and felt fulfilled in a way that I don't think is possible with an open-ended show. Writers and producers have to sow seeds for the next season as to intrigue viewers to come back and see the next season and with this style of story telling that simply wasn't an issue.

All in all it was well worth the ~8 hours I put into it and I highly recommend others check it out as well. The cinematography was excellent and as an added bonus its available in 4k (and looks spectacular in it).
