Star Trek: Discovery and Klingons

I've been watching some DS9 as of late, and sprinkling in a few original Star Trek episodes, too. I love Star Trek. I grew up with Next Gen. I had the technical manual and the Star Trek Encyclopedia as a kid.

I'm a nerd.

Overall, I've been enjoying Discovery. I really like Michael. I really liked Capt. Georgiou, she might be one of my favourite Star Trek captains (obviously not as good as Picard). I really like Saru. I like the story and I'm intrigued to see where it goes, but the Klingons...

I'm cool with redesigning the look of the aliens. Star Trek added forehead ridges to Romulans, they took the Klingons from dudes in Blackface wearing sparkles to what we saw in Star Trek The Motion Picture and on.

But why aren't the Klingons fun? Klingons have joy, they have passion. A Klingon might be in a bar drinking blood wine, but they're not sitting there brooding (unless they're Worf), they're singing, they're telling stories of battle. Klingons on a bridge are singing, telling stories, enjoying the battle. Klingons enjoy life. I don't think there's a species in Star Trek that enjoys life more than Klingons.

Discovery has none of that.
