Upon re-watching the AOW arc, I found it very interesting to look at the perspectives of the workers in the sanctuary. From their point of view, it is clear that Rick an Co are clearly the antagonists.
In a world where death is all around you, finding a safe, secure location with a group of like minded survivors is always going to be a preferable alternative to death. Although the working conditions and the general environment doesn't seem that pleasant, it is still much better than living in the outside world. The Rick and co come along....

They obliterated an outpost, murdering all of the inhabitants without any warning what so ever. All of this was a simple hit contract in exchange for some food. From their perspective this was clearly an act of aggression by one group, which caused the deaths of many families, friends and colleagues of workers in the sanctuary
-
Carl Arrives in Season 7 on the back of a truck, killing two more workers from the sanctuary without warning
-
Rick's group arrives at the sanctuary at the beginning of season 8. They immediately shoot all of the windows out, roll a truck filled with explosives in the compound, detonate the truck and they allow a heard of walkers to surround, attack and isolate the sanctuary. The fear of death is back.
-
The power starts to fail, food supplies begin to run low and there is the impending doom of walkers right outside the front door.
-
Daryl conducts what I have to describe as the worst plan of all time, driving a truck into the sanctuary and letting the walkers storm their home, murder more members of their community and cause complete chaos within their home.
Honestly if you looked at the whole AOW arc from the perspective of a worker in the sanctuary, you really would have a different view on Rick's group. This is one of the things I really do love about The Walking Dead. The moral ambiguity surrounding each characters actions really does depend on the perspective from which you view it. It really does highlight that nobody is actually 'good' in show; good is entirely a subjective perspective
