Gale wasn't a jerk at all. He was a person interested in the business just for the thrill of chemistry, and not for the thrill of crime. Still Walt acted like a jerk towards him due to a petty temperature setting and 'fired' him for almost no apparent reason.
Even after returning, he still had all his respect for Walt. Walt on the other hand treated him like a mere sacrificial pawn. It's understandable that Walt probably had no choice but to get Gale killed, but he surely didn't deserve such a death. Gale even felt sympathetic towards Walt after getting to know about his cancer. This is my second time watching Breaking Bad and season 3's finale made me feel depressed again. I also shed a tear in during the flashback in S04E01.
