Honestly - at this point, they need something monumental. And what I really think that is is a total essential reboot of the show. Everyone dies. Except Daryl. It's in Beth's words. "You're gonna be the last man standing. You are. And you're gonna miss me when I'm gone". Ironically enough, he couldn't carry the show as a leader, but I think he could carry the show as a lone protagonist.
All of Daryl's failure, him dealing with that, leaving Alexandria and migrating somewhere. Washington D.C.? To find what remains of the government? then slowly introduce new characters. Well-written ones. The writing could get better now, but honestly, it;s; easier to make new lovable characters than turn boring ones lovable. Throw an imagined Merle back in the mix, and focus on Daryl's declining mind. Eventually, we have a group again. One we love, and maybe we can reintroduce regulars who maybe also made it out of the cataclysm of Alexandria. Michonne, Carol. Later, introduce Negan, either as a villain again, or a source of conflict for Daryl.
But we don't just need a soft reboot. If we reboot and go back to running around forests and survivor drama and subruban homes again the show will die just as quickly. We need a total change in setting and general tone of the show. This show is at its absolute best when it went away from the settlements and the forest and soap opera drama. Every Atlanta excursion, every tense moment with REALISTIC villains. The entire series and one of the best moments is still Rick hiding in a house taken over by the claimers - such a simple moment but so tense and so exciting. Not every villain has to one-up the last one, and I think the claimers, more memorable than both wolves and termites, exemplify that. Season 4 was the peak of this show and that's because it dealt with tight character interactions and their different challenges.
I know there;s another post too, about a Clem/Lee situation with Daryl. That's a great idea. Slowly reintegrate Daryl into letting himself care again, even though its so dangerous in this world. Being forced into it because he knows he has to protect this random little girl.
I know people will hate putting it back and destroying another civilization. But I think we all know that if the show stays with Alexandria and its residents - it will die, at the same rate its been dying.
