What was it about Kim's decision that earned Howard's respect? [S2 spoilers]

In episode 8, Kim decides to leave HHM. Howard dons his usual and unfair demeanor towards Kim, believing that she'll be moving to Schweikart and Cokely. Once he finds out that she's actually planning to start a solo practice (also as a separate entity as Jimmy's) his behavior immediately changes. From wanting to end the meeting asap, he suddenly shares personal anecdotes and feelings, and even decides to pay for the remaining loan himself. You can already assume that he would not have done any of these had he not learned about the solo practice.

What was it about this decision that earned Howard's respect? Was it just the courage it took to go solo after building a career in firms? Was it just simply because he related to her in his younger days and as he said envied her? I think there might be a more complex dynamic here, especially with how he treats Kim normally.

Also, what do you think is the reason for Howard's overall cold treatment towards Kim? Is it targeted or do you think he treats all low-level associates this way?
