Frustrating Thing on FTWD re-watch

Bored on a Friday afternoon I decided to binge Fear the Walking Dead's first season. While it was better on consecutive binges than I remembered on TV, it was still baffling and still a disappointing missed opportunity. I was excited to see the outbreak Shane described but got something else altogether.

FTWD decided to make the unusual decision of keeping the characters/public at large in the dark of what's happening. They make a point to show that no one is talking about what's going on. But they do this while establishing local doctors being aware and the release of a World Health Organization memo detailing the crisis, the WHO isn't exactly the CIA. And between the internet and national news media, there's no way this wouldn't be everywhere. Instead for days we hear nothing from the larger world, no White House briefings, no chatter from the scientific community, no pressure for answers. It just kind of passively happens with little to no visible societal impacts, we go from a few isolated outbreaks to total apocalypse in a finger snap.
