I see only two ways Nacho gets out of this alive. Either:
-
Nacho completely flips loyalty to Gus
-
Nacho disappears, either through Ed's Vacuum Repair or through Witness Protection
I, like most of you, feel Nacho will probably not survive Better Call Saul. But if he does, here is how it might happen.
1) After the cousins destroy the Espinozas, Nacho unnecessarily reveals to Gus that he understands how this plan benefits Gus, not the Salamancas.
Why would Nacho reveal his understanding of this? It's not the biggest deal, but it does feel like he played his hand when it wasn't necessary. Couldn't he just play the part of a mindless cog, taking orders without comment?
It could be a plot device to help inform the audience. Or it could be Nacho simply reacting with what was on his mind.
But perhaps it also sends a message to Gus, "I knew what your plan was, and I did it anyway," whether or not Nacho meant to express that.
This demonstrates to Gus that Nacho is at least intelligent enough to understand the broader turf war and to not interfere.
Next, Gus says, "Get some rest. You have more to do." Of course, this is not compassion. This is Gus looking after an investment.
Most of Gus's decisions are calculated, cost-benefit analyses. That is why he is so successful.
Nacho is an investment to Gus, one which he needs to protect (at least for now). If Nacho can prove that he provides a greater return on investment than Gus originally thought, maybe he can eventually prove indispensable to Gus.
Remember, Gus is no stranger to keeping despised employees around out of necessity (i.e. Walt and Jesse).
Maybe, just maybe, if Nacho can outperform Gus's expectations, cooperate fully with his commands, or even demonstrate loyalty, he could find some stable position within the organization. Demonstrating his ability to recognize and protect Gus's interests can probably only help Nacho's case.
Full loyalty to Gus would likely require him to stop being an informant within the Salamanca organization. I doubt he can act as a double agent for very long without the twins poetically crafting his skull into a queso dipping bowl for their nachos. (Sorry, I just watched that Tortuga scene from BB).
Becoming a key player in Gus's organization would not guarantee his long-term survival, but maybe it will give him the right foothold to plan his path to freedom.
2) Ah, Ed's Vacuum Repair. It sure beats going to Belize.
Unfortunately, if Nacho takes this route, Gus will probably slaughter Nacho's father. Nacho would never disappear and assume a new identity, unless he knew he could do so without getting his father killed.
That said, perhaps Nacho's father will get killed somehow. In which case, Nacho has nothing to lose and could perhaps make a run for it.
In lieu of Ed's Vacuum Repair, it is also possible he will go to the DEA and enter Witness Protection. Again, I think he would not risk this unless his father were already dead.
I also doubt that Nacho will snitch to the DEA because if he did, Gus would have been revealed long before the events of Breaking Bad.
I know neither of these options sound very likely, but I can't think of any other realistic ways for Nacho to survive. Do you have a better idea?
