The more I sit here and think about it, its actually genius. Hear me out. Carl mentions within the issue itself how Rick survived a ton of shit, just to die like that. And how, like us, its not how he ever thought Rick would go out. That he would be surrounded by family and friends. People who loved him. People he saved and led. Then, and only then would he be at peace. Or, at the very least, he would sacrifice himself to save Carl or another major character(s). Everybody wants a happy ending, but it doesn't always roll that way. And it certainly didn't for him. Sometimes the hero doesn't get the death he/she or everyone else envisioned. Glenn was a heroic character, and look at how he died. Screaming for his pregnant wife as his brains were bashed in. But back to what I said before, and more to what I'm getting at...why a lame/underwhelming death? For one simple reason: there was literally no other way you could've killed him that would've been believable. He survived the Governor mutilating him, an injury that would kill most people just from the shock and blood loss alone. Despite this setback, Rick continued to fight to the best of his ability. In fact, it made him fight even harder. He went toe to toe with many foes (and friends) with only one hand. There's a reason he put an emphasis on it with his speech in #191. Because no matter what you might think, if this guy had his guard up, and was ready to fight you, do you honestly think you could beat Rick Grimes? Do any of you think that after everything this dude survived that he would let anyone come between him and his family? Sebastian could've had a fucking rocket launcher for all I care. The fact remains that this was the best way to end his character. Sudden? Yes. Underwhelming? Perhaps. But still extremely believable and yet...beautiful. I truly see where everyone is coming from. I understand the anger and sadness. Everyone, in a way, feels how Carl does right now. Rick's legacy, his entire life in the apocalypse has been about bringing people together, and keeping them alive. No matter what. What better way to send him out than rallying an entire city to his cause? To his philosophy? It's not about his death. It's about his life. I won't remember Rick Grimes for being shot in the chest while laying in his bed. I'll remember him for the countless lives he saved and being able to lead so many people down an extremely uncertain path. It's what Carl will remember too. That's what makes this so exciting. I predicted this would happen many years ago (a lot of people did), and as sad as I am that he's gone, I couldn't be more thrilled that Carl is now the lead (or so it seems). The books have yet again done what the show could not. Kirkman has developed Carl into the leader he was always meant to be.
Hey, look on the bright side, at least he had the balls to do this and we didn't get a Dumpstergate 2.0.
