After rewatching season 3, I realized it was incredibly dark especially compared to the current seasons

The season opens with the mass genocide of Mexicans for Troy’s experiments. Than Travis gets shot by the Indians. The relationship between the Clarks is very messed up throughout the whole season. We learn that Madison killed her father and we see her abandon her morals. Alicia remake that dad probably killed himself to get away from Madison. She is slightly emotionally abusive toward her kids to get them to fall in line so she can protect them. Everything she does at Brokejaw Ranch is to manipulate herself into power.

Nick and Jeremiah bond over how they are both addicts and have caused hardships for their family. Madison convinces Nick that he got Travis killed and that he can’t abandon his family again so he leaves Luciana alone since all her people were murdered.

Troy is a very complex character. His actions are almost like an addict. He repeats. He does something sick and horrible like killing Mexicans or taking out Gretchen’s family, than he feels bad about it and try to make up for it by protecting people, than he repeats. In the end, he kills almost everyone and everybody he cares about. He finally finds a home with the Clarks when he experiences fear with Nick only to be murdered by someone he saw as family.

Alicia starts to get into drugs with her new friends but that ended when Gretchen was murdered.

We learn more about the conflict between Walker and the Ottos which has a long backstory full of bloodshed and deception. Walker is extremely hateful towards the Ranch and kills about 40 people to get revenge on Jeremiah. Jeremiah is a good man sometimes but when he is drunk, he was abusive towards Troy and his wife, he shot Indians who were trying to take his cows, he killed Walker’s father when he was looking for his uncle, and he decided to let everyone die to prove a point that he won’t back down from Walker. Nick than kills him and Madison makes it look like a suicide to fool everyone including his sons. After slaughtering each other, the hostilities between the ranch and nation continue.

Meanwhile, Daniel thinks he killed his daughter in the fire and attempts to commit suicide. He is helped by Efrain and than joins Dante to torture Efrain. Strand tells him that Ofelia is alive which was a lie which crushed his hope. He than protects Lola until Madison tells him that Ofelia is actually alive. He chooses to help Lola rather than seeing his daughter which results in him not making it. She was already dead while she was waiting for him to arrive. He cannot avenge her because Troy was already dead after he interrogated Nick. Efrain, Lola, and all his friends were murdered by the men that Strand let in. He than was able to avenge Lola before he might have died at the dam.

Alicia was forced to kill all those innocent people in the bunker only to still let everyone else die. Many of 5e ranchers and nation such as Coop were good people. Nick relapsed under the pressure from his mother and everything else that was going in. He made friends with Troy before Madison killed him. Madison pushed away her kids and chose to protect them instead of love them. Finally, Alicia rejects her and Nick tried to commit suicide. In the end of season 3, Madison is alone.

Strand always tried to use and manipulate people to do what was best for himself. In the end, he caused the deaths of many people and finally shot someone, Daniel. Walker and Crazy Dog left to search for his people even though they are most likely all dead.

The shows darkness made is unique and special. Almost all the best scenes and moments came from it. FTWD was about fear and what it does to people. It wasn’t afraid to show the corruption of its characters. The new show feels lifeless. Death gave the show meaning and now it is happy go lucky but it lost its soul. There are no powerful moments and it is just bland and boring, FTWD doesn’t work without fear. It doesn’t work with specific good guys and specific bad guys.
