I finally got to see season 4 and I’m underwhelmed

I don’t have cabe anymore. I used to buy the seasons on iTunes (started with Breaking Bad season 4) so I could watch the show immediately. But after two seasons if that money got tight and my computer got slow and couldn’t justify the memory for it. So I had to wait and watch season 3 on Netflix.

Netflix refuses to put season 4 up, so I had to wait and avoid spoilers for like two years. DVD came out and I was finally able to snag it from the library this week (it’s been constantly out for months). And after finally watching it, I liked it but also am kind of annoyed.

Maybe it’s just me, but I want the Saul Goodman show, bot the Breaking Bad prequel. Sure there’s bound to be some crossover in those objections and I like some of that, but I didn’t need Gus at all, and the show doubled down o this stuff in season 4. I miss Jimmy-centric stuff. I miss more of the legal shenanigans and humor. I like the stuff with Kim and feel like that sometimes gets sidetracked too.

What’s worrying is the show to me is starting to fall into all the classic prequel traps of over-explaining things. I don’t care when Gus built the superlab. I don’t need yo know who did it or how. While I get it was necessary to establish Hector’s stroke a some point, I certainly didn’t need or want an origin story for his friggin’ bell.

We’re getting Jimmy to become Saul and that’s good. But I want the show focused on him. It’s like it doesn’t know what to do with Mike so they have to create his own little pocket show to keep him involved.

It’s not a bad season, but I don’t think it’s the best. Again, maybe it’s just me, but I want the Saul Goodman prequel, not the Breaking Bad prequel. I would hate the show to fall into the trap of non-BB viwers not being able to follow things because they are references to later events.
