Do you think he would have left at the point he did? If the show follows suit of the comics (it probably won't, look at gimple) do you think he would have stayed and let Rick get his true finale like he did in the comics? That would realistically mean only 3 more seasons top and thats if they wanted to stretch it real long.
I just am watching season 9 again and cant help but think if he knew the true ending and that it was in sight he might have stayed?
The big thing I guess is that Carl's gone so the true comic ending can never happen unless its Judith and baby Carl.
