I was one of the fans that religiously watched the show. I picked it up right before season 3 began and didn’t miss an episode through season 7. Season 8 is where I began losing interest, for reasons already discussed 1000 times over on here.
For me, I watched for Rick and, almost, Rick alone. He was SO compelling and interesting and Andrew Lincoln KILLED his role. So, when I heard that he was moving on from the show, I thought it was done for.
I saw they put season 9 on Netflix so I started watching again. I’m astounded at how good it is post-Rick. As sad as I am to say it, Rick’s absence isn’t even felt. Sure, I would love to see him handle this current situation and I ponder to myself about how he’d do things, but at no point after EP 905 did I think to myself “This isn’t as good without Rick.”
Not only is the plot great, but every character has stepped up in his absence. Daryl is no longer the one dimensional grunt machine he has been for the past couple seasons. Negan is beginning to be a character I actually root for. Even the secondary cast has come through (Tara, Henry, Luke’s group).
I’m only on episode 11 as of now, and the Whisperers and Alpha are fantastic enemies, and have provided a level of threat likes of which I don’t think the show has seen since the Saviors were first introduced, and before that, the Governor. They’re terrifying, impossible to anticipate, and genuinely SCARY. I didn’t have a problem with the Termites, or the Wolves, or any other baddies the group has faced, but the Whisperers have just reminded me of the peak villains the show has had.
I’m genuinely interested in this show again, and I hope it doesn’t go anywhere anytime soon, and certainly don’t think it deserves to. Especially when you look at the show overall. It’s entering its 10th season and has really only had 2 (3 if you’re picky) seasons that failed to meet expectations. That’s a hell of a good track record. I can’t wait to see more.
