Like with most viewers, I will admit season 8 was a rough patch for me. However, unlike most viewers, I still thought there was legitimately good stuff in it. But as much good stuff as past seasons? Not by a long shot. I was beginning to get fatigued and felt like Gimple would ruin The Whisperers, and that overall season 9 would be another disappointment. However, when October of 2018 rolled around, I stick by and said “okay, there’s a new show runner. I may as well see how it goes.” I have not regretted that decision.
So far seasons 9 and 10 are my favorites, and every change from the comics Kang is making is a logical one, a welcome one, or both. The acting these past twenty episodes have been absolutely stellar, the brand new lore of The Whisperers and Alpha is incredible, and the dialogue is so amazingly well-written most of the time.
A lot of people may shit on Walking Dead. Say it’s “a lumbering corpse that keeps going despite being dead for years”. Say that it’s a bad and annoying show. But not to me, and clearly not to many others. Because we had the patience to stick it out, we’re seeing not only a reemergence of quality, but one of the biggest comeback stories in television series history.
Maybe the show will lose steam once and for all one day. But until that day comes, and even when that day comes, I’ll be thankful for what Angela Kang and all the others have done to make this show something truly special once again.
