TL:DR: Carol’s impulsiveness is a wake-up call to the communities to finally take action against Alpha.
Arguably, it’s obvious that plenty of people and more are upset with how Carol’s actions have been affecting her and the community this season. As a Carol fan though, I just wanted to play devil’s advocate and describe why some of her actions have merit.
We all know Carol is still suffering from the effects of Alpha and her mental state is still not clear even after this year long time jump. She’s getting impulsive and doing things without consulting others and putting people at risk.
However, let’s look at things from Carol’s view. It has been a year since the pike incident and what have the communities done to fight Alpha and her whisperer army?
Nothing. Other than some new walker training techniques, the communities have just decided to bear with it. Understandably this would be very upsetting to someone like Carol and others who have lost loved ones to Alpha. They want justice for their friends and to have to stand back and let Alpha set the rules is just a new Negan era all over again. It hurts for them to see Alpha get away with it. We have seen with Rick that he tried to follow Negan’s way of life, and how uncomfortable it was for us as viewers to see strong characters having to grovel and kneel. Rick knew that that way of life couldn’t last and made a choice to stick up and fight when enough was enough.
Carol has recognized this and wants the communities to act and while yes there are many reasons for the council and others to want to stay on their side of the border, they must realize at some point they have to stand up. It’s a bit ridiculous that over a year later, no type of plan was formulated to take Alpha down.
Therefore, Carol is taking initiative. It seems reckless to us and the other characters, but she’s trying to just convince them that the time to act is now and there’s no sense in putting this off much further, especially with how Alpha is attacking the communities from within. We saw with the gym incident that obviously Alpha isn’t respecting the borders, so why should our characters continue to?
Regarding the latest episode and the whole situation with Lydia, could you really blame Carol for putting the community over the feelings of one girl? We saw that she was correct in assuming that by showing Lydia to the whisperers, that they would question Alpha’s way of life as we witnessed with Gamma. Obviously people have problems with the execution of her plan but if it changes Gamma for the better than it was a plan that paid off.
Are some of Carol’s decisions stupid? Of course, but what character hasn’t pulled the same shit throughout the series? Daryl constantly went against Rick during the Savior war, Rick has obviously done stuff and things that made me mad, and Carl wins the number one spot of pulling bullshit I was not happy with.
At the end of the day, we have seen time and time again that Carol is smart and tactical and does things that need to get done when others won’t. There are plenty of reasons to see her way of doing things as harmful and I’m not trying to change anyone’s opinions. Just though it would be fun and interesting to try to show her side of things and get a discussion going.
Feel free to disagree or agree in the comments, I’m sure plenty of people have things to say.
