No Backstory?

Being a medic in the TWD universe is worse than being a redshirt on Star Trek. Your fate is sealed. When they introduced Dante, who appeared to have prior medical training, in such an off-hand manner, like "ok here we have another medic now who has taken Enid's place," with no explanation of who he was or where he came from or why he hadn't heretofore been practicing medicine...I wondered what was up with that. It appeared to be really sloppy planning, and I thought it was incongruent for the show, because they usually are quite careful to provide backstory for new people/populations. So....if Dante showed up, by himself, after the massacre, did no one wonder where the hell he'd come from, and if he wasn't a plant???
