A common observation (or criticism, for many people) about BCS is that it's kept the Jimmy and Mike stories almost entirely separate. For some, the Mike subplot just feels like perfunctory world-building for Breaking Bad that has little to do with the central arc of the series, which is Jimmy's moral descent and the breakdown of his relationships with those he loves. In other words, fanservice. However, I think now that we're definitively in the Saul zone, the last three seasons of buildup with the Mike/Gus story are finally going to bleed into Jimmy's world and culminate in something meaningful. The fact that Jimmy believes he's being hunted by the Salamancas when he's introduced in BB means there's clearly something consequential that happens between him and the cartel. My biggest hope for season 5 is that the Jimmy and Mike subplots interconnect rather than just coexist, and judging by the teasers I think that's what we're in for. While I think the writers would be smart to keep the focus on Jimmy's world, the show is naturally going to start feeling more like Breaking Bad, since Jimmy has finally decided to abandon his hopes of becoming part of the "legitimate" legal community and is transitioning full-on into criminal law.
