Shane may have been a bit crazy, but he was the peak of survivalism on that show. He added up the odds and severed what ever person hurt the equation. He truly cared for the group and other people in general but his survival as a whole was priority. If Shane killed Rick he would've turned into another Negan. Negan probably started out as a Shane. Negan is what happens when the Shanes of TWD universe don't get put down or find a personal resolution.
