I’m so glad I gave Schitt’s Creek a chance

I put off watching Schitt’s Creek for a long time even though I liked the cast. From a distance it struck me as a boilerplate fish-out-of-water story where rich people have to deal with not being rich anymore.

Initially my girlfriend and I watched the first few episodes. I thought it was funny and showed promise while she couldn’t really get into it. She stopped and I kept going. While the first season was kind of hit and miss, they really found their stride in season 2.

Occasionally my gf would see scenes out of context and start laughing. I stopped where I was in season 4 and we both started watching from the beginning.

I am shocked at just how invested I became in the characters. David is the heart of the show and the way he navigates his romance is deeply satisfying. All I can do is choke up when I hear Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best”. Alexis may seem ditzy and dumb but I really found myself rooting for all of her relationships/business ideas to work. Johnny and Moira simply thought that having enough money would help their children get past all their problems. Being left with limited monetary assets made them realize just how important family is and what they had been missing out on in years prior.

I’ll be quoting this show forever. Alexis and David’s exchanges are memorable. David’s body language was fascinating to watch. Moira’s word pronunciations made me cackle. Some of my favorite off-hand comments came from Twyla. She would always drop random (sometimes darkly funny) facts about her life. Then you find out why she acts the way she does. I can’t wait to re-watch and pick up on things I didn’t see the first time out.

If you’re on the fence about it, I encourage you to give season one a shot. If anything about it makes you laugh, the later seasons will only be funnier.
