Since I bought the humble bundle and have begun rereading the series (and once my Galaxy tablet comes in the mail, I'm gonna pick back up in the whisperer arc... I haven't finished it yet, so no spoilers please!), I got to the part where Rick nearly "converts" Negan and I'm reminded of how much that scene bothers me
For starters, Rick says Negan might be "the fucking stupidest person alive" and Negan's reaction is a sad, confused face and a "what?"... Really? I know Negan isn't used to being talked back to, but this line alone seems HIGHLY uncharacteristic of Negan as a character overall
Secondly, Rick's proposition of stopping the fighting and forming a barter system between the communities is such an obvious idea that it's always bothered me how quickly Negan just... Succumbed to that idea that clearly any person with a functioning brain could've come up with in 5 minutes. I would've thought that maybe Negan was being sarcastic and was prepared to gut Rick once he'd let his guard down, but it was HE that let his own guard down and, mixed with his previous reaction to being called stupid, makes me think it was genuine.
Mind you, this is the sociopath that routinely kills people with a smile and was, only scenes before, talking about pissing on Rick's body. The dude that's been taking supplies from other encampments and understands the basics of supply and other aspects of bartering (barring the part where he gives something back because he can just intimidate people into giving him their shit)
To me, the entire exchange seems like Kirkman wrote himself into a corner and opted to drastically change a major character for one scene rather than rewriting what he had already established. I love this series, but this one scene has ALWAYS bothered me... Especially since it could've been a throwaway scene. Negan's unwilling capture was all that was necessary to move the story forward
