[SPOILERS] Fixing Arya’s story in Season 8

Two complaints about Season 8 that get brought up a lot are “Arya killing the Night King wasn’t foreshadowed at all” and “Arya’s face switching abilities were forgotten about”.

I think I may have found a way to address both of these issues without affecting the rest of the story (not that the rest of the story couldn’t use fixing, either). Apologies if something similar has been posted before.

I haven’t read the books (yet), but I’ve deduced from browsing this sub that there’s a prophecy from the books that says Azor Ahai created his sword, Lightbringer, by stabbing it through his beloved’s heart, and it’s implied the Prince/Princess who was promised would have to do the same.

In this alternate storyline, I’d have Sam read about this prophecy and relay it to Jon in 801. Jon assumes Sam is implying he’ll have to kill Dany, but Sam tells him that the Valyrian word for “beloved” is used in all contexts, not just romantic, so it could mean he has to kill Sansa, or Bran, or even him. This does not make Jon feel better.

In 802, Arya never leaves the Hound and Beric to go have sex with Gendry. Instead, he gives her his speech from 805 about how she doesn’t want to be like him. He tells her the only thing that kept him alive when she left him to die was that he needs for the last thing his brother sees before he dies to be his face.

Later, during Podrick’s song, the montage shows us various characters in couples; Grey Worm and Missandei, Dany and Jorah, Sansa and Theon, Tyrion and Jaime, and Arya and the Hound.

Then in 803, in the scene where Beric convinces the Hound to man up and go save Arya, Beric and the Hound are ambushed by a group of wights and Beric sacrifices himself so the Hound can get to Arya. He saves her, but is brutally wounded. He tells Arya that he’s done for, and she stabs her dagger through his heart, just like he showed her to in Season 4. This is the same dagger she uses to kill the Night King at the end of the episode, fulfilling the Lightbringer prophecy.

Arya still rides for King’s Landing in 804, except this time she’s alone. In 805, she doesn’t make it into the Red Keep until after Dany’s begun destroying the city. As Cersei, Qyburn, and the Mountain are fleeing, their path is blocked by... the Hound.

The Mountain kills Qyburn and attacks the Hound, but before he can even land a punch, the Hound slashes his throat with Arya’s Valyrian steel dagger. He watches as his brother dies, ensuring his face is the last thing he sees.

Then, in a not-so-surprising reveal, Arya pulls off the Hound’s face with tears in her eyes. She turns to Cersei, and the two glare at each other for a few moments. Arya looks at the city burning outside and knows that one way or another, the Queen will get what she deserves. Then, without saying a word, Arya turns and walks away.
