Plot hole? - why did they have to cover up the ambush?

Why did Mike/Gus's crew have to cover up the ambush of Saul by the Columbian mercenaries?

Let's say it had not been covered up, and Lalo was told the truth that Saul was ambushed in the desert.

  • Maybe Lalo would have assumed that Gus had ordered the ambush to keep him in jail, despite Gus's denials. This seems like it would be a plausible explanation, except that I assume Juan Bolsa (who ordered the ambush) would have the foresight to realize that the blowback to Gus's organization from both Lalo and the rest of the cartel would be astronomical if he was thought to have ordered it
  • Juan Bolsa would not have come forward to admit to the ambush, as that would prompt wide cartel warfare as well

So writing this, I guess it makes sense that Gus covered it up because I only see consequences for him if it was discovered.

But that prompts another question - why on earth would Bolsa order the ambush then? It seems the only possible outcome had the ambush happened without intervention was basically cartel warfare against Gus - far worse than what Lalo was doing. And Bolsa clearly did not want this disruption.

Is the only explanation that Bolsa was being an idiot?

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Apologies if I missed something obvious.

EDIT: thanks u/plasticunderpants and u/slipn_jimmy: What I missed is the scenario where the ambush goes off without hitch in secret, and the money and Saul vanish without a trace. In this case, Lalo would not suspect Gus involvement and would simply think Saul ran off with the money (he says as much when Saul initially doesn't show). This would have accomplished what Juan Bolsa was going for in ordering the ambush. Once Gus intervened, he had to cover up what happened since the Lalo would have been suspicious of his involvement in either the coverup or the ambush itself.
