"The Fly" is the most unique episode for any drama series.

In my opinion, I feel that "The Fly," which is heavily criticized, is one of the most important episodes that makes Breaking Bad what it is today. I think what makes it so special is that the show takes a complete stop from the usual action and drama and analyzes the character's current emotional state: especially Walt. The time and setting Walt was in during this episode was what determined what character he was going to be. Walt speaks of his place in the universe and how he met Jane's Dad. He goes on a tangent of subatomic particles and space and time. He begins to analyze all his mistakes in his past and wishes that he had died at a specific point in time before this episode's time. Walt could either become clean and accept fate during this point of time, or he could continue becoming exponentially more evil. In the episode he had the choice to talk about how he could have prevented Jane's death. His avoidance to confess was the stepping stone for his evil state that was left to come.

While the fly as well represents tons of symbolism on Walt losing his touch for his morality and moral compass, I think the episode break for the characters to become self-aware in space and time is what makes this episode so great. Most shows do not stop the action and have an episode dedicated to the character's life choices and decisions. Walt could've became moral or becoming more evil. The timing of this episode was very significant as well because it was marked that halfway point in his drug life. This episode just made the audience feel more for the characters. This episode was done because the show was too high on their budget. Yet they were able to make this episode so important to the character development. I think if other shows took the time to step away from the action and have something just as simple as killing "a fly" or some other simplistic event, then they could dwell further into the emotions of other characters. Because at the end of the day, plot can always exists. It's important to focus on the characters that are in the plot.
