[SPOILERS] Upon Rewatching the Final Season, I really wanted to share my thoughts on how to improve The Golden Company, a huge missed opportunity.

Upon rewatching the final season, along with a lot of its problems, my personal biggest was the complete misuse of The Golden Company. (And how to fix it)

They were supposed to be this badass mercenary company, uniform and deadly, think Shadow Company from MW2 or First Battalion from District 9.

First fix: Give them some ruthlessness to not only intimidate our protagonists, but shape them as formidable before we see them.

When Euron goes to recruit them, have him leave with Cersei’s instructions to prove their worth by laying siege to and decimating the Second Sons, since both are already in Esos. When Capt. Strickland is introduced to the Queen, he presents here with the rotting but recognizable head of Dario, saying that this was who was holding Danaerys’ capital city. It would show the merciless and efficient nature of The Golden Company, while giving Dario a heroic sendoff, showing that after all this time, he stayed and held the city like his queen asked.

Also, perhaps showing them routing the Dornish or Tyrell forces would have shown their prowess in combat as well.

Second Fix: Most obviously, bring elephants. Massive ones with armor and everything, archer and pike nests atop their backs, and many of them.

Third Fix: Their appearance looked utterly unremarkable, possibly historical persian/moorish influence in helm design and scimitars, but nothing to really impress.

Since GRRM is no stranger to using historical cultures when world building GOT, I suggest we do the same with the Golden Company. Appearance wise, base them off of The Winged Hussars. It would be iconic and recognizable, especially their cavalry, and would be a subtle nod to the Hussars history as mercenaries before becoming and organized military force. The siege of Kings Landing absolutely deserved a Hussar Charge, and would have made a formidable obstacle for The Unsullied, Dothraki, and Northern Forces.

Fourth and Final Fix: The actor that played Captain Strickland seemed alright as little as there was of him, but I think it’s an opportunity to give Cersei a sort of pseudo Tywin Lannister in her life. Make him older, I’d say get Christoph Waltz or someone similar to play him. Make him a cunning field aristocrat, like Napoleon or Bromhead from Zulu. Also, let him either die in combat as a formidable foe, or let Sir Gregor kill Him when he tries to confront the Queen for his pay after he sees his forces routed and defeat imminent.

Just my thoughts on the matter.
