Everything about this episode was amazing! From the atmosphere, to the characters.
It was here you began to see, ‘civilization’ die, let me explain: as the joker once said: when the chips are down these ‘civilized’ people will eat each other.
In this scene, we began to see the mental break Shane started to have with Rick returning, and Lori being a bitch (to put it bluntly).
Shane beating Ed almost to death, while warranted imo, really showed, how unstable he truly was. In the beginning, he was doing his best to be the best leader he can be, but here we see how volatile he can truly be. If Rick actually died from the gunshot in the beginning of the show, in my opinion, everyone would be dead either at most with Negan.
While the girls stared at him as a monster, he wasn’t wrong, Ed was a piece of shit that had it coming. But Shane’s anger really cemented his eventual downfall.
Jon is an absolutely amazing actor, he did an amazing job with Shane’s arc and I wish we at least had one more season with him.
Going onto Merle: holy shit.
This man is a true badass; from his mental break, I think this really showed how savage humans can truly be, especially him. He sawed off his own hand, to save himself from the walkers. Which was such a great use of reoccurring symbolism in season 1, as it demonstrated the lengths humans can go when the chips are down.
Overall, this is probably one of the best episodes in the whole TWD show. And I’m so glad I got to experience it live so long ago.
