RIP to that talented man.
Throughout all of Hershel's arc, every scene between Hershel and Rick always had me sitting up in my seat, regardless of the content. Imo, no two actors had better chemistry than Scott and Andy. And you could say that most of Hershel's big moments come by way of interactions with Rick.
But then 4x05 hits.
Scott Wilson is frankly on his own stage, commanding it. And I'm left in awe after just now reaching that episode in my series rewatch.
First of all, as a whole, the episode is brilliantly written and directed. "Interment" finds the flu epidemic in the prison reach it's breaking point, while Rick and Carl deal with the prison walls caving in. The action is dealt in rapid succession and the stakes keep getting higher with every passing minute.
The Rick/Carl stuff is phenomenal, but Hershel fighting to save as many as he can inside cell block A - and dealing with the dead turning - is clearly the main attraction.
Definitely the emotional depth is amplified because it's our beloved Glenn on the verge of death, but nonetheless, Hershel is the center, and the heart, of the episode.
Scott Wilson features even more prominently than Andy Lincoln, and this is may be the only episode where I think Andy is outshined, despite how good he still is.
I'm sitting here and I just had to applaud Scott Wilson's brilliance. And I had to come here to a place where people recognize it as well and can praise him with me! Simply a captivating and gripping performance. He was unknown to me outside this series and I'm so grateful that I got to witness his craft.
For me, this is a top 10 episode in the series.
