[NO SPOILERS] I'm new, could someone please explain to me what is happening with the books?

I just finished GoT (the show) and loved it and it is now my favourite show so I thought I would read the books as I heard they were even better than the show. But when researching it I became confused very quickly 1. Is ASOIAF different to GoT? 2. Are the books not actually finished yet? 3. Follow up if they arent finished will they follow the show or go completely different and would the books end before or after the final episode ( chronologically speaking)
