Is anyone besides me curious as to why no one ever found out and confronted Tywin, Cersei, or Jamie about their gold mines running dry a full 3+ years before Tywin’s death and especially after Tywin’s death when they were more vulnerable?
Their entire reputation was built upon being the wealthiest family in Westeros, or the world, and what that wealth could do for them or to their enemies. But in reality they lived off of credit and loans from the Iron Bank, and the Tyrell’s were actually far more wealthy.
There’s no indication in the series that Varys or Littlefinger knew of this except for when Littlefinger mentioned to either Lord Bolton or a lord and lady in the Vale that Tywin kept his family in power through sheer will.
I feel like their enemies could have capitalized on this weakness. Perhaps Stannis was the only one to do so — unintentionally — when he got the Iron Bank’s backing. Though, it obviously didn’t do him much good.
