Sam Tarly is likable but infuriating in the series
I’m re-watching the series again. In the first 2 or 3 seasons, Sam is insufferably annoying. He has his good qualities, but he is such a liability when he’s anywhere outside of a library. He definitely contributes greatly later in the show with his mind...only his mind.
Examples of being a liability: How he can barely get his ass up when he gets knocked to the ground when sparring upon arrival to Castle Black. Indeed, a couple times he has to be lifted to his feet. He wasn’t hurt, just knocked to the ground. God, it’s pathetic. Or when he’s directed to hit Rast or whoever when sparring, it reminded me of that knight of the vale who told Littlefinger that Robin Arryn swings a sword like a girl with palsy.
Or when they went beyond the wall and the WWs and their dead army started coming out of the blizzard and the other two take off running. Of course Sam waddles a mere 3 feet before plopping to the ground and “hiding” behind a rock. Then he has the nerve to get mad and cries that the other two kept running and didn’t potentially die by coming back to get him because he can’t summon the will to put one foot after the other for more than a meter at a time before collapsing. For Gods sake, does his body not produce adrenaline?
Now, I hated Rast. Truly, I didn’t like him. But he was right about not wanting to risk his life for someone who refuses to help themselves.
To be clear, I do like Sam...after those first couple seasons. Still is annoying occasionally, but I like him. Just needed to vent about how infuriating and useless he is in those first few seasons. And those whinging sounds he makes when in extremis...don’t get me started.
