I've seen a lot of people praising the third season of Fear The Walking Dead, even going as far to say that it is the best season of the franchise. I just don't get it. To me, Fear has never risen above any season of the main show. My major thoughts about season 3 in particular:
-
Killing Travis when he had just gotten a serious character shift (Cliff Curtis had to leave to be in the upcoming Avatar movies, but that didn't make his character's departure any less disappointing).
-
Madison's complete non-reaction to Travis's death. I know she was supposed to be a cold person, but that doesn't make a compelling main character for me.
-
Alicia being the sole survivor of the bunker. Plot armour up the wazoo.
-
This is a problem of the first 3 seasons in general - never staying in one location long enough to feel like the characters are making progress as survivors. People make jokes that Rick and crew fuck over every location they come upon, but the Clarke family seemed to make it their profession. First in season 1 they leave their own neighbourhood's gates open to the dead. Season 2A had the yacht and the vineyard. 2B had the hotel and the Colonia (a shameless homage to the Hilltop Colony if you ask me). Season 3A had the Otto's ranch, and then in 3B there was the Bazaar and the Dam.
-
Nick and Troy tripping on zombie glands. Just, what?
-
Getting lazier with Nick's camouflage. He started in season 2 with covering his whole face in walker blood, but by the end of that season and into 3 he was somehow getting by with just wiping a couple of lines on his face. This makes the guts ponchos on the main show look like they're trying too hard.
-
Killing Jeremiah Otto - he was an interesting and very well acted character. Imagine if he had to survive alongside the native people.
-
Killing Troy. Didn't care much for him on his own, but he was great for Nick to bounce off of.
-
Sending Qaletaqa Walker away into the unknown. The guy was a very capable survivor and leader who I would have loved to see in further seasons.
Very sorry for the rant. I just really don't get why some people praise FTWD season 3 so highly and it's been bugging me. I genuinely would like to know what people liked about it.
