Digging trench is faster and easier and Require no specialized knowledge. With an Excavators i would assume easier and faster than building wall, also it does not require any special knowledge. I would assume Excavators are readily available in every construction site. In rural Georgia specially where Alexandria and Hilltop is, i think miles long/20-30 meeter deep can easily be built in a few weeks. Key here is the simplicity, in Alexandria they needed Deanna Monroe's Architect husband to build and plan the wall.
Trench communities are Secure, or at least better than having a wall. Think of Trenches are like in half circle and walker can only walk straight. Having multi layer of Trench could easily protect a community for any sort of attack.
Trench communities are easy to expand. If community is growing you can just dig more trench and secure more space.
Soil from trench can also work as extra barrier
