Chances are, everyone already knows how that goes in the comic, but anyhow - marking this as a spoiler. :) After Rick lost his hand, it didn't affect his life in the comic at all. He still managed to beat several formidable opponents one-on-one (mostly through luck and/or biting), and the comic never makes any mention whatsoever of any difficulties caused by his missing hand. There was only one time when he said something like "I can't button up my shirts" jokingly but that was it. You'd think it'd be pretty damn hard for him to reload magazines, or clean his weapon, or just do a ton of little everyday things.
The comic never, ever mentions that... Did Kirkman ever address that in any of the letter columns or interviews? In his epilogue at the very end, he mentioned that he was a lot dumber when he was a younger writer (he'd wanted to end the comics at issue 75, with Rick taking over Alexandria and it eventually getting overrun, etc) - is it possible that he chose to go with the amputation purely for shock value, and didn't quite think it through to the end? Hell, if nothing else, that would've made Rick 50% less efficient in hand-to-hand combat with zombies. :-/
I'm not sure if I'm overthinking this or if others had the same thought as well haha
