Because for me, that scene was the very first symptom of this sickness to always surprise/shock the fans instead of telling a great storyline.
Don't get me wrong, I still love TWD and I think it had many great moments after Glenn's fake death, but I think that back then around 2014-2015, the show was so much of a success that the people directing TWD became crazy and greedy. Let's keep in mind FearTWD aired the same year of TWD S6. The beginning of it all...
They kept the suspense on Glenn's death for one entire month of episodes, and that scene barely had any impact on the storyline. Nicholas still could've just died and shock Glenn without him falling off the dumpster. Enid still could've find Glenn afterwards and they still could've helped each other. Maggie could've still think Glenn was dead because he wasn't actually in Alexandria.
If you think about it it's not like about the previous shocking moments of the show. I always defended Sophia's death as a way to prove the apocalypse was unfair even to kids. The walkers don't care about your age, they just want food. Same for Lori, I think it helped Rick, Carl & Maggie grow and it had hope in it with Judith. Andrea is an exception of course, her death was pointless and was likely for shock factor but at least it was just her within 5 seasons. Hershel's death was also necessary to change Rick IMO. Even Lizzy was dark but it was necessary for Carol. All of these, except maybe Andrea, made the story moving forward. Glenn's fake death did not.
But it did not stop here. TWD s6 is really the cliffhangers' and weird endings' season. Remember 6x05 in Alexandria ? I remember it ends on a shot of blood coming from a wall. This was never adressed or explained by anyone before or after. What was the point of that shot ? Keep the viewer interested to tune in next week ? Or the ending of 6x08 where Sam yells for his mom in the herd, but then you're back at 6x09 (which is one of my favorites) where that whole scene is kinda... ignored ?
Or the ending of 6x15, where Daryl is shot by Dwight and you don't see if the wound is really bad or not.
Or the ending of 6x16, which is probably the worst. But it worked tho, everyone was talking about TWD back then. And I'm not gonna say that 7x01 scene was too violent etc, it's a brutal show after all. This is special here, because Glenn & Abe deaths were meant to shock the group and the audience anyway. But it is the buildup to it in s6 that bothered me. Although sparing Abraham from his comic fate to have Negan get 2 kills was questionable.
After that, you could clearly see they were extending the storylines, characters and episodes all the time so that they could win more seasons (hello the Saviors' arc who was far too long to me).
And Carl... We all know why his name is here. Same thing. For shock value. But it did not serve a purpose like Glenn and Abraham. Was it worth it killing the main purpose of the story to spare Negan & the Saviors ? Morgan could've get Carl's death, especially since he was gonna leave the main show anyway. And we lost other great characters like Dwight to go on Fear (but I know it had something to do with a behind the scenes situation for this one, I just wish they gave a proper ending for Dwight on TWD). Because they started thinking about worlds colliding but it was -and is- all over the place.
And when Andrew Lincoln announced leaving, they litteraly used Rick's last episodes as a way to tune people in. And although I loved these final episodes, I just wish we did not have all this teasing. That was kinda cheesy.
More recently, Siddiq's death... They ruined what could've been a great character for me and he was litteraly one of the only characters holding Carl's legacy with Rick, Michonne and Enid out. Just for a shocking wanna be spy storyline when everbody saw Dante coming from miles away (except the characters apparentely...). And the worse is that Michonne follows Virgil, a stranger, alone on a remoted island the exact same day when she previously spent 5 years being paranoid because of the Jocelyn incident. You thought the Siddiq scenario would make her be more afraid of Virgil lol... So that is why that storyline was stupid to me and just for shock.
I would've prefered TWD universe to be limited to the main show. What made the mosts of us fall in love with this series was how great the characters were portrayed, not how much their universe was gonna extend on every show everytime. I miss the day when the show could bring shock to us, but not only for the sake of shocking us but also to tell us a great human story.
