Rewatching the series and it's unclear whether the coming winter and the rise of the white walkers was related or coincidental. Did winter make them stronger? Did their rise make winter stronger? In the show, it seems that Winter was coming no matter what and the white walkers don't get through the wall without the dragon.
There is kind of an implied relationship between winter and the white walkers in the show, but what is the actual relationship? It seems that without Danny's world's worst aerial strategy, winter could have come and gone and the dead would still be stuck north of the wall.
