During and after my first watch through years ago, I always felt Tyrion was the best character and was always so clever and usually right whenever he spoke or made decisions. On my second watch through this month, I now believe every decision he made starting with murdering Tywin all the way up through the sacking of King's Landing was an egregious mistake. Some examples:
1) Killing Tywin out of rage, thus alienating his siblings and creating a power vacuum within the Lannister house and the entire monarchy that ultimately leads to the deaths of his neice and nephew, along with the dissolution of two great houses.
2) Allying with Danearys... self explanatory.
3) Cutting a deal with the slavers and wise masters, thus leading to the seige on Mereen and the deaths of innocents and the burning of their fleet and major loss in his credibility in the eyes of Danearys (which comes into play later on)
4) His plan to take Casterly Rock and thus being easily out maneuvered by his brother and leads to the destruction of House Tyrell and the ability for Cersei to pay the crown's debts to the Iron Bank, thus opening the door for the contracting of the Golden Company. This is a major blunder, as with the backing of the Golden Company, Cersei is now more evenly matched with Dany's army, thus giving her the illusion she can win the war which necessitates the capturing of Missendei and forces Dany to have to use Drogon to sack King's Landing, and we all know how that plays out.
5) Tyrion's misplaced belief in Cersei to "do the right thing" and surrender to Dany without bloodshed because she is pregnant. This gets Missendei beheaded and sparks the events in "The Bells".
6) Misplaces his faith in Danearys herself, thus "choosing" her over his friend Varys, thus getting him executed, even though he was right all along.
Methinks Tyrion is actually the major villain of the entire series, the wolf in sheep's clothing. And not because he is malicious, but ironically because he wasn't clever when he needed to be. His ignorance cost the realm thousands of innocent lives.
